The WebSphere eXtreme Scale product has always been unusual in the WebSphere product portfolio in the fact that it doesn't prerequisite the use of WebSphere Application Server. Among other things this has given a great development experience where a simple JAR is all that is needed to develop against.
However when it comes to a production environment, I am often asked whether it makes sense to deploy eXtreme Scale on top of WebSphere Application Server or not. The integration with the App Server is great and provides all the management tools many companies are familiar with.
The answer is a genuine "it depends" and will often be down to preference and budget as the App Server will need licensing for this purpose.
I would start with the default answer of not running it on the App Server. My reasons for this include the following
It is also worth pointing out that I have not discussed the eXtreme Scale integration with the Liberty profile, which will develop some interesting integration scenarios. But I think that's the topic for another blog!
