Solution Modeling tips using Rational tools
For those of you that have used, or tried to use the deployment modeling capabilities in Rational Software Architect v8+ ( product information ) you may struggle with just how to create the topology model(s).
I wanted to share with you some techniques I have used for a few years now. I hope this helps you as much as this as helped my colleagues.
Did you know...
So one of the challenges we face is finding a quick and simple way to capture content related to architectural decisions and/or use cases within and in conjunction to a model.
There is a capability in Rational Software Architect that allows for a user to capture content using the Rich Text Editor included in the product
So here is how I used it.... I applied a table template (created in an MS Word document) for a Use Case ( and Architecture Decision) into the Documentation tab for a UML Use Case model element and a UML class element, respectively.
Then, for example, as I needed to create a Use Case, I copied the Use Case -Template below, renamed it, and filled out the content. Then I created a diagram to represent the Use Cases, or Architectural Decisions, that I was interested in... and used the IBM Doc Gen Plugin ( See new version ) to generate the document with the content in it. The content in the table is put in the generated document exactly as it is entered in RSA.
