A very exciting interview of Manoj Saxena about Watson at Pulse 2012. He describes his vision on how he wants to apply Watson to "life events", which are complex real life scenarios. The interview highlights the complexities that Watson can overcome and help solve complex "life events" based issues. Watson has already been applied to help such scenarios in the health care and financial services industries. Watson is helping in real-life scenario at Richmond for Wellpoint as I write.
Watson, as cool as it sounds, is a complex solution from IBM, involving super fast hardware and state-of-the-art software bundled with research algorithms to enable its use in following scenarios: high compute, data intensive, cognitive learning situations, probabilistic decision making, natural language usage et al. The Watson Solution, as complex as it is, brings about the opportunity for IBM to make a difference in every walk of life. Manoj stressed on how Watson would change businesses for the world by saying: "What Google was to search, Watson is to Discovery". IBM will together with its clients discover new business approaches, solutions, future etc.
Manoj mentioned that he would sell the complete solution and not just the hardware and software. He is looking at a new business model for IBM to share the benefit of the business outcome for the client by using Watson in their business. This is an innovative business model, which helps the client to reduce the risk of heavy investments and ensure that IBM stays motivated on common goals for the client's business.
The highlight of Watson's delivery to client has been the possibility of making it available to Wellpoint and having started delivering value to them within 87 days of the signing of the contract. Manoj mentioned that many clients (in hundreds) feel that they have a need for Watson and he is carefully moving on this journey to ensure Watson gets used in special situations that cannot be handled by existing technology in the industry. Partnering with premium clients of IBM, where we have had several years of experience working together, is what Manoj is suggesting. He has a program called "Ready for Watson" to invite such partnerships and assess the use of Watson.
In the list of interested parties to Watson, we have interests from our friends at Hollywood too ! :-)
