"“SOA has allowed us to innovate because it allows us to… focus more on what we are doing instead of how we are doing it.”" - John Mitchell, Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Pep Boys
Here's a video talking about how Pep Boys has used IBM to transform their business with SOA.
Pep Boys is an automotive aftermarket retailer. They also have a service bay, where you can have various levels of service done for your car, all the way from tires to the major mechanicals.
Business need:Point-of-sale was an outdated piece of technology and process that was failing, primarily from the hardware side of it. So, the decision was to go in and replace all that.
Solution:So what Pep Boys decided to do …was to take the services that IBM offers through WebSphere so that they could implement new point-of-sale functionality without ripping apart all of the systems in their stores.
Benefits:There have been improvements in availability of information and what their employees can see as they are doing the transactions with the customers. At the same time, being able to send the information back up the chain to the Pep Boys corporate office so that they can do the traditional things that retailers do such as replenishment, track sales, see what their customers are buying and then in the end may be market products and services back to them.
