Originally created as a software tool, IBM Support Assistant Lite will also be expanding in to Systems and Technology products area. In this article, we'd like to provide an example based on WebSphere Application Server.
Support Assistant Lite for WebSphere Application Server tool is
provided as an aid for troubleshooting IBM WebSphere Application
Server and other IBM software products. The tool focuses on automatic
collection of problem data. Information pertinent to a type of
problem is collected and analyzed to help identify the origin of the
problem under investigation. The tool assists you by reducing the
amount of time it takes to reproduce a problem with the proper
tracing levels set (trace levels are set automatically by the tool),
as well as by reducing the effort required to send the appropriate
log information into IBM Support.

Version information is now
available for ISA Lite and its sub-components. Version info is
automatically written to the console and log at startup. The same
info can be found under the Help menu, and by passing -version to
the start scripts.
New option allows you to select
another file transfer option when the initial file transfer fails.
Launch scripts will prompt the
user for JAVA_HOME if it is not already set and there is no Java
found in the PATH. In addition, this prompting will occur
indefinitely if the JRE entered is not supported, or until the user
decides to quit.
Command line instructions for
basic ISA Lite usage are now available. Run ISA Lite with the –help
option from the console.
User guide can be now accessed
from the Help menu in the ISA Lite GUI.
A visual indicator shows if the
data collection has ended successfully or it it failed. The progress
bar is green when collection is completed with no errors and red
when it fails.
No files are
written to ISA Lite installation directory (except inventory related
files) if -useHome specified.
- Persistent files are written to
$HOME/.ISALite (%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH% on Windows)
files written to /tmp/.ISALite (%TEMP% or %TMP% on Windows)
Temporary files are deleted on exiting ISA Lite
If ISA Lite does not start
within 60 seconds, a Graphical User Interface may not be available
and the tool will start in console mode.
