With more and more data being generated inside organizations these days and regulatory agencies setting forth data protection and auditing regulations, a must have solution in your software infrastructure is a data auditing and security watchdog. Now, I'm not talking about intrusion detection systems as most of the data theft comes from within an organization. I'm talking about data theft using everything from simple SQL queries to selecting and copying data onto a disk and taking outside the walls of an organization. It runs the gambit from healtcare records to payroll information and sales force data. Auditors that are attached to your business will also be asking details about who has access to what, never mind wanting to go back and look at the historical data that may now be missing. Recently I spent time with Ron Ben Natan of Guardium Inc. to talk about the database auditing and security space. Ron Ben is an expert in this area and has recently published a good book entitled "Implementing Database Security and Auditing". Having the right solution in place for protecting and monitoring your business data is an important part of the Chief Data Officers role. Beyond auditing, some of these solutions can help organizations determine if data is lying dormant as the solutions also allow you to track what applications are accessing data. It could turn out that a data source that hasn't been touched over the past 9-12 months is likely dormant data. Several other companies in this space include Tizor Systems and Lumigent. It will take some time for companies to realize the potential of these solutions, however, all that it takes is one piece of missing data.
