The BVQ Storage reporting Service (SRS) is a solution which combines the strength of an onsite installed BVQ with the cost advantages of SaaS. SRS provides a very simple way for users to do storage monitoring by replacing time consuming monitoring steps with easy to understand reports. The SRS service is so sophisticated, that in case of unexpected performance problems a full BVQ analysis can be started immediately to quickly detect and fix any problems.
In many cases storage... [More]
Another new feature of the latest BVQ offline scanner allows to scan more than one systems at once.
This is especially helpful when you plan to use BVQ Copy Services Package to analyze Metro Mirror or Global Mirror connected systems.
A profile is created per Storage system, which is then used for this one system to separate the data. In this way, many different SVCs and or Storwize systems can be scanned at the same time.

A ctually, this is a very simple question: "why buy expensive storage, if it is possible to achieve the same with a much cheaper storage?"
This sounds very reasonable, but often it is just difficult to implement. Let´s have a closer look on a typical top level target system for storage planning:
This whitepaper shows how analysis can help to reduce costs very quickly
Two customer examples from big to small
A very useful method is the analytical storage planning based on measurement data. In the following example, the MS Exchange-area of a company was analyzed to determine the required supply power.
see attached picture
Fig 2: measured values allow a very precise planning of power consumption and thereby reduce purchasing costs and operating costs. Another positive effect is the safety which results from this planning. These measurements show exactly how much power is needed for an environment. If this demand is covered by the... [More]
I really like the idea of having a turbo option on the Storwize V3700, to quickly solve performance restrictions.
But I also learned that many performance issues cannot be solved with only adding more performance power to the system. When you do so then it might happen that you see some improvements but you will be in the same situation again after some time.
Whats coming next? Next size storage system?
So I think it makes sense to better first analyze and find the reason for the performance issue. Even more, when I... [More]

This redbook show how to setup an SVC stretched cluster correctly
Stretched Cluster is very famous when you use SVC in a VMware environment.
It allows seamless fail over when any component of a SVC storage environment breaks
The benefit is, that the VMware virtual machines will not stop working.
A former IBM colleague of mine created a very nice foil about this - please use F5 to start the animation after downlod

Analysis of a completely overloaded SVC See the complete Story here Customer Use Case: Analysis of a completely overloaded system I
added this document because I have never seen such results before. The
Storage has real performance Issues and it is easy to see that there is a
big problem to get the data written down from the SVC caches to the
backend storage. A Case where I believe that the storage backend has to
be exchanged with something that performs better. Technically the used
storage should be able to support all... [More]
Thi is the news entry in BVQ WIKI http://bvqwiki.sva.de/x/aYBl I want to invite you to a live demo with BVQ - the demo will be scheduled with Teamviewer. You need to receive an invitation for this so please send an email like stated below. The Web Conference will cover: SVC / Storwize Performance analysis and problem determination Use VMware integration to find the critical volume to analyze in case of VMware problems some time for Q&A The Web Conference Demo will start on three different times - please choose the time that fits best... BVQ is by today the only analysis software on the market which covers the new front end and back end cache structures which have been introduced with SVC Storwize code V7.3 V7.4.
The knowledge and coverage of these new structures are eminent to be successful with performance problem analysis.
We have many storage performance examples collected in our white paper section

Use Case Target
A 40 TB mail system has to be moved from an oversized 10k, 300GB storage to a
new storage environment with lower cost 7.2k, 1TB disk drives and Raid 6. The
question is how many disks are needed in the new 7.2k disk arrays to deliver
the same performance as before.
With BVQ we are
able to analyze the aggregated performance values of all Volumes, which make up
the mail system. find more here: http://bvqwiki.sva.de/x/BYA6 pdf whitepaper download
