We just released the new offline scanner which will now also scan the drive information from any Storwize product.

With this we can make more accurate statements about the performance of individual drives in an array.
This function is available only for the offline scanner today, because we can do the analysis in the lab where we already use the upcoming BVQ release 3.4.

The BVQ development team is currently working on the new BVQ dashboard functionality. This new dashboard should become available in 1H2015.
The dashboard is great for monitoring, you can open several dashboards and put them onto different screens, this will then be a complete storage control station.
Each of the different windows can be graped, zoomed out and used for any kind of analysis.
put different SVC or Storwize systems on different monitors or you just mix them - as you like.

Storwize Family Software V7.3 has implemented many changes, specially in the cache architecture, Easy Tier and re-striping of storage pools. The changes target to enhance overall system performance. The experience is good but sometimes little things can cause trouble and can lead to a deterioration.

I just finished an performance bottleneck analysis for an 8 nmode cluster with several 100 TB and found one thing which I think might be a commonly made mistake in many of the bigger SVC environments. This picture shows the MDisk performance of SSD storage which is not acceptable. We have 37 ms latency on 37000 IOPS which is a bad value for this technology.

The three main steps for a performance status (60 min)
This is new for the upcoming Version 3 from BVQ (Nov 13)
BVQ can now scan on 1 minutes interval. It is incredible who much detail becomes uncovered when you scan on 1 minute.
Why does this matter?
A smaller scan interval will allow even deeper looks into the system.
The possibility to change these settings on the fly without any interrupt supports normal ands deep analysis mode.
To switch from 5 minutes to 1 minute is easy and does not need any special activity!

We had a very interesting month. We have fixed performance problems on 3 different V7000 Systems in Europe - all of them are running much better now. The problems have been found in very different places: SAN, Cache Overload, Compression, ...
In no case we had to extend a system - all was solved with changes in setup only.

In this customer example we had the opportunity that two identical managed disk groups with easy tier did perform completely different.
The Target was to understand why and to find ways to improve the situation.
Both managed disk groups have the same technical setup.
V7000 -1 (Cluster 1) we found that the improvements which have been expected by Easy Tier have not been achieved
V7000- 2 (Cluster 2) showed much better results for Easy Tier
