uploaded a new file to developer works. This was part of a so called performance
workshop we did for one of our customers.
One of the
questions was about the performance of the underlying storage infrastructure.
We did a
lot of analyses but the key foils showed that the customer will never be able
to exhaust the DS5300 with 15k Arrays.
We came to the following
First - don’t buy any more 15 k drives because you have enough high performing storage for both sides.
Option 1 - Three Tiers
Option 2 – Two tiers with SSD and Easy Tier
This is the main analysis chart for the Storage Tier recommendation.
Imagine that the complete area are 100TB. The blocks inside this area are different volume - the more capacity a volume has the bigger it will be displayed in this chart.
All red volumes are volumes with high performance characteristics - these are the 2.5% of the complete storage capacity.
All Orange Volumes are the once with medium performance characteristics - typically 10k drives are needed for them.The rest in green are real slow performers - best top be put onto some SATA space.
The following chart is very typical for SVC Volumes when data can be cached
this volume does generate a lot of read traffic between 3am and 4am - backup in this time it runs with approx 15mb/s to 35 mb/s - looks rather performant but the SVC cache is eating up all this -
Read cache hit is around 96% in this time frame and the data rate below SVC cache is only 2 mb/s to 4 mb/s (dark blue).
