More thoughts on smarter villages... went well in my recent trip in India, Kerala...
As you can imagine, one of the key drivers for collaboration is to learn just in time and over a period of time...
Saba and IBM announced Saba as the learning accelerator for IBM WebSphere Portal.
This is well supported by the IBM Workforce & Talent Solutions (WTS) offering that integrates services from Human Capital Management practice with a wide range of tools, technologies and IBM Research projects, including Saba's learning and people management applications. WTS is the first holistic offering in the talent management marketplace that addresses the science of people management throughout the entire employee lifecycle.
Peter Coy in the May 11th 2009 Business week issue wrote this article "help wanted" describing the 3Million jobs currently (as of beginning of March 2009) out there in USA that folks are having a difficult time filling up: http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/09_19/b4130040117561.htm?campaign_id=rss_daily
This 3Million number maps to bureau of labor statistics JOLTS report, conference board, etc.
The openings are in accounting, health care, government, and education...
Challenges described include lack of right skills, people not being able to relocate due to the housing challenge...
So what if the government and entrepreneurs start leveraging smarter collaboration capabilities to
(a) train people on new skills?
(b) go mobile, work from home/remote?
Great report on Smarter Railroads:
"The smarter railroad requires an intelligence that is networked, communicating and aware across the rail ecosystem. It requiresinformation to be shared across the enterprise and between manydifferent stakeholders including the railway, shipper, car owner, travel agent, municipalities, inter-modal carriers and customers, localand global."
"Imagine if: If passengers could manage their entire door-to-door journey on their mobile devices, receiving continually updated suggestions for more convenient route based on their own travel history and preferences"...
"Customer interactions with rail companies will change. With the recent emergence of Web 2.0 applications and the proliferation of mobile and smart devices, customers are becoming more informed and want more control of their travel,
shopping and interaction with railroads. In the future, it will matter less which company gets them from point A to point B; they will care more about how quick, cost effective or easy it was to plan and manage the journey. Similarly, suppliers will want to book their own freight and have it moved directly from manufacturing
to stores, regardless of carrier. They will self select their transit options by cost, efficiency and impact to the environment as required by their customers."

Are you sharepoint challenged?
There is a surge in sharepoint challenged projects and people...
See this posting from Mike Gotta: http://mikeg.typepad.com/perceptions/2009/03/circling-around-to-enterprise-20-again.html
"Are there issues with SharePoint? Yes, absolutely. The user experienceis not great. The functionality I expect in discussion forum islacking, or requires customization. The blogging capability is perhapsthe poorest of any enterprise product out there. The wiki is really nota wiki. The implementation of RSS rather than Atom was a stunningmistake. There's no tag/bookmark capability and the social networkingcapability is mediocre. SharePoint requires customization - feworganizations succeed at an enterprise-level with SharePoint withoutsignificant investments to customize the platform."
What about you?

6. Reduce errors
7. Speed up discovery process
8. improved quality of role-role interaction

10. transparent policy making lead to improved efficiencies
11. cost savings from shutting down low yielding projects
Aaron has an interesting session in April: http://www.web2expo.com/webexsf2009/public/schedule/detail/5771
And you got to read the IBM Enterprise Tagging Services ROI math: http://jisi.dreamblog.jp/blog/1739.html
"IBM’s ETS cost $700k to develop and deploy across theworldwide intranet as a sidebar to a number of key web properties:traditional search engine results, top content pages, and webapplications"
"The ETS team instituted a survey to ask users how thistool helped them. What they found was amazing when you look at it incontext: the average person saved 12 seconds, across the 286000+searches performed through ETS each week. This sums up to 955 hourssaved each week across the company. In terms of cost savings, itamounts to a rough estimate of $4.6 million a year, in terms ofproductivity gain. The reusability of this page widget also resulted in$2.4 million in cost avoidance (reimplementing this for each site)."

This is about perpetual collaboration: http://www-03.ibm.com/industries/government/us/detail/landing/G153005R79354P19.html?re=gihome67gov
And the key enabler is a series of Smarter Collaboration capabilities to optimize, connect, collaborate, and innovate..
Congrats Vivek Kundra, Obama CIO: http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Government-IT/Google-BlackBerry-Enthusiast-is-Obamas-CIO-Choice/

Lotusphere 2009 was quite exciting. I am back again here due to requests from customers and partners who wanted to keep a pulse on competitive insights. So what is new? what is hot?
Cost reduction strategies is hot. Remember? Liberate, Migrate, Virtualize...
Desktop Virtualization is hot. Particularly if you virtualize your Linux desktops. Yes Linux. Check out this solution IBM announced with Virtual Bridges and Canonical in Dec 2008.
Then of course, how can you collaborate smarter? What does it mean to People, their workspace, and the business processes and relevant information sources?
