Social Business transformation
Good writeup on customers trending towards desktop alternatives..
Excerpts from this article:
As of October 2009, about 9% of 1,414 business technology professionals surveyed by InformationWeek Analytics said that their organizations made extensive use of netbooks and 19% predicted they would make extensive use of them by 2011. About 33 million netbooks were shipped worldwide in 2009.
The worldwide thin client market may grow to 7 million units in 2012, from 2.9 million in 2007, according to IDC. Gartner (IT) expects that by 2014, 15% of traditional professional desktop PCs will be replaced by so-called virtual desktops, which also leave most computing and storage tasks to a centrally located computer, rather than maintain them at the employee's workstation.
"For every dollar I spent buying a PC, I spent 50¢ to the dollar every year maintaining it," Kapoor says. "There's a lot of technical expertise that's required to do that maintenance." iQor has eliminated its help desk and, before long, expects to cut its IT staff to about a quarter its previous size.

Interesting interview with Craig Mundie, Microsoft's Chief Research and Strategy Officer in the CIO magazine
"The next thing that will emerge is an architecture that allows theapplication developer to think of the cloud plus the clientarchitecturally as a single thing. In a sense, it is like client/severcomputing in the enterprise. It was the homogeneity that existedbetween some of the facilities at the server and the client end thatallowed people to build those applications. We've never had that kindof architectural homogeneity in this cloud-plus-client orInternet-plus-smart-devices world, and I'm predicting that will be thenext big thing."

"The idea of electronic medical records is uninteresting? Yes, in theway that people have historically talked about them. In fact, thisAmalga product that we've been building and deploying really movesbeyond the idea that you need a prior, specified medical record. Itjust ingests all of the historical medical information, synthesizesmetadata, flattens it out and creates a new abstraction for dealingwith all for the medical information."

reveals the findings of a Forrester survey: In addition to the obvious around server virtualization and interest in the Cloud, here is a perspective on desktop virtualization:
"Alternatives to traditional PC technologies: Firms are feeling real painover the costs of maintaining PCs. Seventy percent of enterprises and 74percent of SMBs said they hope to lower PC costs with alternative technologiessuch as various forms of desktop or client virtualization."

According to Michael Sampson's blog (http://www.michaelsampson.net/2007/07/mark-bennett-on.html ) a Lotus Notes 5 customer in New Zealand is planning a roll-out of Notes 8."All of the Domino Servers run on Linux, and they are considering the roll-out of some Linux desktops. In terms of Notes 8, Mark says, "What exactly do our people need beyond Notes 8, the inbuilt productivity editors, and a browser?" In other words, Notes 8 paves the way for a move away from both a Windows desktop and Microsoft Office."
