Yochai Benkler dubs it 'the wealth of networks." Howard Rheingold's term is "smart mobs." It's the idea of technology-enabled collaboration … and it's making us all smarter.
Of the many experts weighing in on this subject, I wanted to take a comment by Seamus McGrenery
, technical manager at Riverdocs Bureau Service:
Arguably mass human activity is more like the migration of Mormon crickets, driven by extreme competition, than the planned cooperation of an ant colony.
If we look at technological progress over that Twentieth Century it is hard to make the case that cooperation has been the main driver of progress.
Extreme competition was involved in the rapid adoption of motor transport and flight in World War 1. World War 2 saw the introduction of jet engines, rockets, radar and atomic bombs. Developments in early space flight, computers and even the genesis of the internet were as a result of Cold War competition.
None of these achievements could have come about without humans working together - in many cases with individual contributors having no sight of the overall goal. But the driving force behind these developments was not cooperation.
If you didn't know by now, social media is a BIG thing. It is the make or break of business models in today's tech world. There is a joke around the web world that "Social media will ensure you business is around in the next 5 years!"
Witch social media on the rise, more and more people are noticing the extreme values of social media. A company called Reachd actually takes the ideas of social media and implements them into marketing classes. If you are a small business or entrepreneur I would really consider looking into Reachd thay have some pretty interested courses on web marketing and from what it seems, social media seems like the bread and butter of the course. Check out the course at:
This week in my Bioelectricity class we learned about muscle contraction and how individual muscle twitches build on each other until tetanus (complete contraction of the muscle) is reached. Muscles are made up of small individual contractile units called sarcomeres which when they contract by themselves change the length of the muscle and produce a force that is negligible. However, when the sarcomeres contract in unison, the tension force produced is great enough to allow us to perform all of our normal day to day activities.
We also had a discussion in class about science education and how to get more young people excited about science -- often times in class there was a certain interaction with a role model who provided key influence either in a positive or negative direction.
This led me to think about the idea of life changing experiences. Is it ever a single experience, a specific interaction with a teacher or other role model that leads us to the career choices we make or, are we more influenced by the small events and sets of circumstances that "sum up" and provide this life altering influence?
