Yochai Benkler dubs it 'the wealth of networks." Howard Rheingold's term is "smart mobs." It's the idea of technology-enabled collaboration … and it's making us all smarter.
Of the many experts weighing in on this subject, I wanted to take a comment by Seamus McGrenery, technical manager at Riverdocs Bureau Service:
Arguably mass human activity is more like the migration of Mormon crickets, driven by extreme competition, than the planned cooperation of an ant colony.
If we look at technological progress over that Twentieth Century it is hard to make the case that cooperation has been the main driver of progress.
Extreme competition was involved in the rapid adoption of motor transport and flight in World War 1. World War 2 saw the introduction of jet engines, rockets, radar and atomic bombs. Developments in early space flight, computers and even the genesis of the internet were as a result of Cold War competition.
None of these achievements could have come about without humans working together - in many cases with individual contributors having no sight of the overall goal. But the driving force behind these developments was not cooperation.
If you didn't know by now, social media is a BIG thing. It is the make or break of business models in today's tech world. There is a joke around the web world that "Social media will ensure you business is around in the next 5 years!"
Witch social media on the rise, more and more people are noticing the extreme values of social media. A company called Reachd actually takes the ideas of social media and implements them into marketing classes. If you are a small business or entrepreneur I would really consider looking into Reachd thay have some pretty interested courses on web marketing and from what it seems, social media seems like the bread and butter of the course. Check out the course at:
This week in my Bioelectricity class we learned about muscle contraction and how individual muscle twitches build on each other until tetanus (complete contraction of the muscle) is reached. Muscles are made up of small individual contractile units called sarcomeres which when they contract by themselves change the length of the muscle and produce a force that is negligible. However, when the sarcomeres contract in unison, the tension force produced is great enough to allow us to perform all of our normal day to day activities.
We also had a discussion in class about science education and how to get more young people excited about science -- often times in class there was a certain interaction with a role model who provided key influence either in a positive or negative direction.
This led me to think about the idea of life changing experiences. Is it ever a single experience, a specific interaction with a teacher or other role model that leads us to the career choices we make or, are we more influenced by the small events and sets of circumstances that "sum up" and provide this life altering influence?

In the year leading up to this talk, the web tool Twitter exploded in size (up 10x during 2008 alone). Co-founder Evan Williams reveals that many of the ideas driving that growth came from unexpected uses invented by the users themselves.
Evan Williams is the co-founder of Twitter, the addictive messaging service that connects the world 140 characters at a time.
It is by sharing these moments as they're happening that lets people feel more connected and in touch, despite distance, and in real time. This was the primary use we saw for Twitter from the beginning, and what got us excited.
One of the many ways that users shaped the evolution of Twitter was by inventing a way to reply to a specific person or a specific message. So, this syntax, the "@username" that Shaquille O'Neal's using here to reply to one of his fans, was completely invented by users, and we didn't build it into the system until it already became popular and then we made it easier. This is one of the many ways that users have shaped the system.

Mobile apps have been a big part of people’s daily life ever since Apple has came out with their iPhones, iPads, and iPods. Now that smart phones have been part of a daily life schedule, many people reply on their mobile phones to know what is going on in the world. With a click on a mobile app, many are able to find valuable and relative information they need and some just helps you make your final decision that much faster. Mobile apps are interactive and easy to use making it easier for people to make fast decisions when they need to. One example of that is Urban Spoon mobile app, if you have a hard time deciding where to eat or what kinds of food to eat, just put in your preferences and shake your phone and Urban Spoon will make that decision for you. It is easy and simple as that! Enjoy eating where Urban Spoon has decided for you!
With the emergence of new technology and how people interact with each other through the internet, social media is a big part of people’s lives these days. Yelp is a big part of social media. When people are looking for a restaurant to eat at or where they should get their hair cuts or even which dentist they should choose, many now refer to Yelp.com. Yelp gives people the opportunity to write reviews of restaurants and services they have experienced and let the world know about it. With many people having smart phones at the palm of their hands, anywhere they go they can refer to Yelp and find out where they would like to go for dinner that night, replying mostly on their own experience or other people’s experiences that they have read on Yelp. Yelp check ins can also be posted to Facebook, which is another social media portal. By posting it on Facebook, your friends are now intrigued to try this place you raved about.
Amazon.com has been one of the primary websites that many consumers rely on for many years for online shopping. One of the main attractions to Amazon.com is the discounted prices offered on many items. Everyone is looking for savings wherever they can find it and Amazon is the perfect place, especially since Amazon.com does not charge taxes on its items, which is another big selling point. Because many people use this website, many rely on others reviews on items they are planning on buying to help make their final purchasing decisions. Since consumers can not physically see the item before buying it, making the reviews from other people more valuable.
I just wanted to share a video that Daryl Pereira has posted for TGMC contestants. In this extremely informative video, Daryl goes over the various tools that developerWorks offers. To be more precise Daryl answers two relevant questions regarding TGMC. What exactly are the social components available on developerWorks? How do the groups, blogs, wikis, bookmarks and other tools work together and what are their respective advantages?
After viewing this particular video, you should be able to get a nice jumpstart on creating a group that has various tools such as blogs, wikis, tools, bookmarks and various other key instruments. I hope that this video will help you on your social media endeavors on developerWorks
Below is an extremely relevant blog that pertains to blogs and tagging. This video is actually posted directly to IBM's developerWorks website. You can find this posting under the Phase 2 blog section. Throughout the video, it is highly emphasized that relevant tags are attached to the blog to ensure the right target audience is attracted. Realistically thinking, a blog is quite useless if it isn't shared or searchable by the given community. I personally believe tagging is one of the most important aspects to ensure the success or failure of a given blogger. I hope this video will help potential bloggers in the future! Enjoy
With the emergence of social media, many other individuals have come to realization of how vital social media really is. Microsoft Corporation is a world-leader in computer software. In the last decade, Microsoft has taken strides towards advancing their hardware business with the evolution of the X-Box gaming platform and mobile phones.
Current attempts to delve into the social media realm can be attributed to the company's new operating system (OS), Windows 8, the X-Box Live online community, and the revamped Office 2010 Suite.
Office 2010 showed a considerable change over the previous (2007) version: cloud integration. In an attempt to compete with GoogleDocs, a free service offered to anyone with a free G(oogle)mail account, MS Office 2010's features are a lackluster attempt.
In an attempt to compete with the evergrowing IBM DeveloperWorks and SalesForce.com's 'Chatter' enterprise social networking platform, Microsoft hopes to unroll an overhaul of their SharePoint system to integrate many of the key social features being adopted in the new web 2.0 era.
