In times of trouble, social media is a nice tool to help remedy a problem. Recently Visa's services were down for approximately 45min in certain areas of the US on Sunday April 1. Many Visa cardholders were extremely upset because they were unable to make purchases or pay bills. As of 5:17 April 1, spokeswoman Sandra Chu reported that the problem was unrelated to the security breach on Friday. On Friday there was a security breach at Global Payments Inc. in which it potentially affected both Visa and Mastercard customers. However, today's particular case is completely un related. Chu reported that the Sunday incident occurred from a Visa update.
Having social media at Visa's disposal, Visa was able to reduce the amount of speculation about the incident. Visa was able to relay facts to their customers to ensure that the issues are being handled accordingly.
Ok so I thought the Google Map's April Fools joke was funny until I recently discovered Gmail Tap. There has been numerous complaints about how texting can be a problem in certain scenarios. What Gmail TAP does is it replaces the normal qwerty keyboard and fills it with a "dot" and a "line." The idea behind Google TAP is Morse code. It is Google's method to bring back a dying communication form. This video is a must see.
Getting back to topic, all these jokes and gimmicks that Google is posting today on April fools is a strategic method of social media. Even though these jokes are irrelevant/just for fun they bring a load of traffic to the Google website. This is truly a fun way to use social media to create a positive upon the Google branding.
Is it important for you to know that your school is using social media? For most of us, we may care or not. But let's look at some of the benefits of having your school tuned into social media. If you attend a large university your may not be fully aware about all the events going on. With social media, your school post, blog, send invitation, or simply perform a status update about particular events. With that knowledge now posting in your social network you have been given an opportunity or choice. An opportunity or choice for you to decide whether to attend or decline, but none the less an opportunity to be given a choice.
Let's put this into perspective. You are computer science major at SJSU, and have been looking to have an opportunity to network yourself with Google. However you have no connections to Google whatsoever. With your huge school load you simply only have time to do your projects, homework, and hit up Facebook from time to time. In the next few weeks SJSU is hosting a career fair open to only computer science majors and Google will be the spotlighted company. In scenario #1 SJSU does not post to Facebook, their website, Twitter, or even send out an email. Only those who have walked by the career center will be aware about this awesome event. In this scenario your MAJOR opportunity has walked by. In scenario #2 SJSU blogs, posts, and updates on Facebook, their website, Twitter and other social media sites. Your being a member of Facebook see this once in a lifetime opportunity and take full advantage of it.
In essence scenario #2 sounds like a winner. Although it was a cheesy scenario, very similar scenarios happen on a frequent basis. It may not be initially important to you, but it may be extremely important to those around you, or even the you in the future. You just never know. It is better to be equipped with social media than not at all.
As you may have read from previous blogs social media is extremely important. However there are individuals, business, non-profits, and organizations that are struggling with getting social media going. Yes, social media may be a little tedious to get started, but once it is up and running the wealth of benefits are totally worth it.
Jason Fox, Marketing Manager, and Howard Chung, VP Business Development, provide a nice 2:22 minute video on "Don't Give Up on Social Media." Within the video they go over the important aspects of social media and they also go over the "networking" aspect of social media. Check out the video to get a better understandin!
Farmers are using Twitter and Facebook to share the real time ranching story with the public audience targeted directly to their consumers. Farmers are feeling that there is a large disconnect between farmers and consumers. Farmers are under the impression that consumers are losing sight of the process of how food is brought to their tables. This also provides the consumers to understand where and how their food is grown.
Additionally, consumers are allowed to connect with farmers to ask questions about processes and how tos. Overall, farmers are simply trying to communicate with their consumers to rid the fog of uncertainty about farming. Check out the YouTube video below :
Non-profits and organizations use Social Media too...
Businesses are not the only ones taking advantage of social media, non-profits and various other organizations are taking a strong foothold as well.
Non-profits and other organizations alike post on the web to ensure a message or idea is communicated out to the public. Similarly to businesses, if this message or idea isn't targeted to a audience or is unable to be found, the message becomes useless and totally ineffective. To prevent this particular incident social media plays a huge role.
Social media portals such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and other networking sites allow messages, updates, and ideas to be viewed by thousands of individuals at a time. The nice aspect of sites like Facebook is that the audience does not have to go to the message, the message comes to them, in this case their Facebook update feed.
Staying in tune with social media brings in a wealth of benefits for both businesses, non-profits, organizations, and general individuals. Social media is no longer an option, it is a must!
Below is a video how non-profits can attract donors using social media
If you didn't know by now, social media is a BIG thing. It is the make or break of business models in today's tech world. There is a joke around the web world that "Social media will ensure you business is around in the next 5 years!"
Witch social media on the rise, more and more people are noticing the extreme values of social media. A company called Reachd actually takes the ideas of social media and implements them into marketing classes. If you are a small business or entrepreneur I would really consider looking into Reachd thay have some pretty interested courses on web marketing and from what it seems, social media seems like the bread and butter of the course. Check out the course at:
This week in my Bioelectricity class we learned about muscle contraction and how individual muscle twitches build on each other until tetanus (complete contraction of the muscle) is reached. Muscles are made up of small individual contractile units called sarcomeres which when they contract by themselves change the length of the muscle and produce a force that is negligible. However, when the sarcomeres contract in unison, the tension force produced is great enough to allow us to perform all of our normal day to day activities.
We also had a discussion in class about science education and how to get more young people excited about science -- often times in class there was a certain interaction with a role model who provided key influence either in a positive or negative direction.
This led me to think about the idea of life changing experiences. Is it ever a single experience, a specific interaction with a teacher or other role model that leads us to the career choices we make or, are we more influenced by the small events and sets of circumstances that "sum up" and provide this life altering influence?
With many large corporation out in the business world. Smaller businesses really need to consider their target market. Traditionally marketing to an audience cost large sums of money. In this particular era, marketing, if done right, can be free. How? Social Media.
Staying diligent with social media portals such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and other networks, is a key lifeline for small business marketing. With the design of social networks, the majority of business is generated by word of mouth. Entrepreneurs need to understand that business in the social media era is not dependant on how well they advertise, but how well their customers love and express their love publically about your goods or services. Approximately only 15% of perspective clients will believe company generated advertisements while, the remaining 85% strongly trust and believe in peer reviews and testimonials.

With the emergence of new technology and how people interact with each other through the internet, social media is a big part of people’s lives these days. Yelp is a big part of social media. When people are looking for a restaurant to eat at or where they should get their hair cuts or even which dentist they should choose, many now refer to Yelp.com. Yelp gives people the opportunity to write reviews of restaurants and services they have experienced and let the world know about it. With many people having smart phones at the palm of their hands, anywhere they go they can refer to Yelp and find out where they would like to go for dinner that night, replying mostly on their own experience or other people’s experiences that they have read on Yelp. Yelp check ins can also be posted to Facebook, which is another social media portal. By posting it on Facebook, your friends are now intrigued to try this place you raved about.

Microsoft Corporation is a world-leader in computer software. In the last decade, Microsoft has taken strides towards advancing their hardware business with the evolution of the X-Box gaming platform and mobile phones.
Current attempts to delve into the social media realm can be attributed to the company's new operating system (OS), Windows 8, the X-Box Live online community, and the revamped Office 2010 Suite.
Office 2010 showed a considerable change over the previous (2007) version: cloud integration. In an attempt to compete with GoogleDocs, a free service offered to anyone with a free G(oogle)mail account, MS Office 2010's features are a lackluster attempt.
In an attempt to compete with the evergrowing IBM DeveloperWorks and SalesForce.com's 'Chatter' enterprise social networking platform, Microsoft hopes to unroll an overhaul of their SharePoint system to integrate many of the key social features being adopted in the new web 2.0 era.
