We recently invited Dr. Niu Bai, a subject matter expert on Big Data and Information Management to speak at the IBM Innovation Center in Toronto and Montreal. Following up on the Partnering for IBM Big Data events, we asked Dr. Bai to give us an end-of-year update on the future of Big Data.
Here's what he had to say:
I recently moderated a Big Data panel discussion at a Connecting Companies with Capital event held at the IBM Innovation Center in Waltham, MA. This was a very well attended event with more than 150 entrepreneurs, investors, and thought leaders. The panelists were industry veterans, VCs and entrepreneurs and we had a very lively and interactive discussion. Here are some of the highlights:Status of the market
Is Big Data still just hype? The consensus is that though Big Data is still in its early stage in terms of adoption, it is way past just hype. We have seen early adopters in retail, financial services, telecom, healthcare, and energy spend on Big Data to gain more insights into their customers, increase efficiencies, and create new revenue streams. This view is attested by a new IBM-sponsored big data study from EMATM Research & 9Sight Consulting entitled Big Data Comes of Age
. According to this report, adoption rates show that 34% of respondents in large organizations (500-5000 employees) are in operation with big data projects, 44% are in serious planning, and 22% are still investigating. In short, Big Data is ready for prime time!Where are the best opportunities for start-ups?
There are many domains of Big Data technologies, from infrastructure, data acquisition, tooling, integration, to visualization and application. The panelists believe that while you may contribute in any of these areas, the best opportunities lie with the applications developed for specific use cases and solutions to help acquire and aggregate variety of data. There are also 3 S’s – scale, security, and simplicity – to enhance Big Data deployment. While scale is well covered, making Big Data secure and simple to use remains a good area for innovation. Are enterprises ready for Big Data?
For the panelists, this question is almost irrelevant or at least not the right question. Enterprises have no choices. They have to embrace Big Data to gain competitive advantage or they will be left behind. The focus cannot just be on the system of records and needs to be on system of engagement as well as system of transaction. Big Data can help in sharpening such focus. In other words, enterprises can and should benefit from Big Data right now. It may just well be that 2013 will be the year of Big Data!

Dr. Niu Bai is Worldwide Business Development Lead for Big Data at IBM. He joined IBM via Guardium acquisition. At Guardium, he was Director of Global Channel Marketing and Programs, responsible for double-digit channel revenue growth. Before Guardium, he served various marketing, sales, and business development positions at NetScout Systems, Open Market and Shiva/Intel. Dr. Bai got his PhD from Boston University and Master of International Business Studies from Darla Moore School of Business at University of South Carolina.

What is Big Data? It's one of those keywords that has become increasingly prevalent as our use and consumption of information has become more demanding and all-encompassing. In an attempt to keep up to date on the ever changing areas of technology, I've been reading up on the topic. Here's a summary of what I've found to be the basics.
"The term Big Data applies to information that can't be processed or analyzed using traditional processes or tools."
IBM defines Big Data by three characteristics: volume, variety,
What does this mean?
- Volume: The sheer amount of information collected on a daily or even hourly basis by organizations is massive, reaching to petabytes. Imagine having to analyze and sift through for nuggets of relevant data.
- Variety: Data is being collected from a whole range of sources, from sensors to smart devices, emails to documents, social media forums, etc. Combined, these data generators bring in both traditional and raw data that may or may not be structured.
- Velocity: How fast is the data flowing? It's not enough to know how quickly it is being produced, stored, analyzed, but we also need to know how quickly the data will become obsolete.
As I continue to read up on the topic, I'll share my insights and discoveries with you. One of my key go-to sources is a fellow IBM-er, Lennart Frantzell, who writes for the Silicon Valley IBM Innovation Center blog

Last week, the IBM Innovation Center - Canada ran the pilot for the PureSystems Certification Preparation Workshop. This 3-day workshop focuses on the PureFlex System and includes sales and technical training on the first two days followed by testing on the final day.
