Status of the market
Is Big Data still just hype? The consensus is that though Big Data is still in its early stage in terms of adoption, it is way past just hype. We have seen early adopters in retail, financial services, telecom, healthcare, and energy spend on Big Data to gain more insights into their customers, increase efficiencies, and create new revenue streams. This view is attested by a new IBM-sponsored big data study from EMATM Research & 9Sight Consulting entitled Big Data Comes of Age. According to this report, adoption rates show that 34% of respondents in large organizations (500-5000 employees) are in operation with big data projects, 44% are in serious planning, and 22% are still investigating. In short, Big Data is ready for prime time!
