Who is a celebrity? Anyone who is celebrated!
What is branding? A process that makes a person, product, service or just an idea stand out from the rest!
Conglomerates spend millions on branding every year. Small to medium businesses don’t have that kind of money. Also, that scale of branding is not necessary for small to medium businesses, entrepreneurs or self employed professionals. Even if you are a salaried professional, you need to brand yourself. Only branding can make you a celebrity, even if you are not.
For clarity, let us first understand what makes a person a celebrity.
• A celebrity is someone who is amazing at something. A local barber who has been transforming the hairstyles of people in the neighborhood or area is a celebrity. A musician in a city who attracts hundreds of people every week or on weekends is a celebrity. The scale or scope of such influence is limited and that is fine. The whole world doesn’t go crazy for a star player with the Mavericks. Likewise, you may not know the name of the most celebrated musician in Croatia.
• A celebrity is not someone who has championed everything in life. He or she is not the most desirable person or a perfect human being. He or she is just the best in what he or she does. When we consider someone a celebrity, it is always associated with what the person does. It could be baseball or basketball, hockey or tennis, singing or acting, music or direction, finance or technology, business or education and anything else.
Now, how can you use branding to become a celebrity?
• The first step is to identify what you have that others don’t possess. Let us presume that you are a professional in a particular industry where there are thousands like you. Narrow it down to your immediate region or city and there will be hundreds. Even if there are thousands in your city, you must figure out what is that exclusive attribute you possess. It could be interpersonal relationships, oratory, network, your sense of style, knowledge or your attitude. It could be anything. Your objective is to use branding to become a celebrity in what you do so people know that you are the sheer best or one of the best.
• Branding is about touching people’s lives so they remember you. Whenever you do anything in your job, make sure you leave an indelible impression. That will spread and you would emerge as a celebrity over time.
