The Global Entrepreneurial Landscape: A Look at France
“Entrepreneur” is a French word, but are entrepreneurs still to be found and raised in France? With poor economic growth, a brand-new government finally starting to hunt down 30 billions for its budget, a lack of entrepreneurial culture, a (bad) reputation of a slacker country with strikes and riots, what is up with startups in France? Though the startup scene is fuzzy, it is buzzing and improving in numbers and quality. Like the neighboring UK, France has had to cope with crisis and a slow economy for a while, but still startups are... [More]

12 days, 3 continents, 25 companies, 70 mentors, 38,000 kms
It’s been a busy start to the second half of the SmartCamp year. The program has expanded rapidly from 9 cities last year to over 20 this year. We re-started after the summer on August 31st in Paris (who says Europe has too many holidays?) before moving to Sydney on the 6th Sept and Singapore on the 10th. Overall there have been many highlights, however I wanted to call out a few and give a flavor of the differences between the different locations. Paris We held our first ‘healthy breakfast’ to discuss an extension to the program for startups... [More]

Rock Health, a seed accelerator targeting health-related mobile and web applications, recently held their second ever Health Innovation Summit , bringing together over 300 innovators, academics, clinicians, and investors to inspire dialogue and action around innovation in healthcare. What's the key to a good pitch? -- Unhindered advice from mentors at SmartCamp Boston
It was a truly unique experience to be a fly on the wall at
yesterday’s mentoring sessions at SmartCamp Boston. Six startup companies gave six minute pitches
to a room full of mentors, venture capitalists, angel investors, academic
thought leaders, and industry experts.
Then the real fun began – critiquing them. The startups were eager for the feedback and
constructive criticism of the mentors, as they understood that certain aspects
of their pitches were not as strong as others. The mentors were very impressed with the
technologies... [More]

Six minute pitches from six passionate entrepreneurs -- SmartCamp Boston continues
My previous post ( http://ibm.co/KMRCQ6 )
expressed my awe in regard to the expertise of the mentors at this week’s
SmartCamp Boston. And rightfully so –
being in a room full of minds from vastly different industries and experiences
produces a wealth of expertise that you just can’t get in situations outside of
these. From anecdotal advice to tested
business strategy, the mentors offered ideas to these new startups in a genuine
effort to help them overcome challenges and grow their businesses. After hearing the presentations from the... [More]

SmartCamp Boston: A summer intern's perspective
In a few hours, I’ll be sitting in a room with six startup
tech companies as they pitch their businesses to a room full of experienced
mentors, from industry experts to academic thought leaders. I am at the IBM Innovation Center in Waltham,
Massachusetts where SmartCamp Boston will kick off. This is my first experience at a SmartCamp,
but it’s incredible to be a fly on the wall at an event like this. A SmartCamp is a mentoring and networking
event aimed at identifying early stage technology entrepreneurs developing
technologies that... [More]
