The final event of IBM Global Entrepreneur Program -
SmartCamp Istanbul competition where early stage entrepreneurs who develop business ventures that align with IBM’s Smarter Planet vision are
identified, took place on October 5. After the 5 finalist companies presented their solutions, Skin Scan was
identified as the winner. The prize includes IBM mentorship for 12 weeks and a spot in the IBM SmartCamp World Finals.
IBM announced the winners of the IBM SmartCamp Istanbul competition(See Livestream Replay, where early stage entrepreneurs –
companies in business for less than five years, that develop business ventures that align with IBM’s Smarter
Planet vision and offer solutions for world problems in the areas of energy, healthcare, transportation, e-
government. The winning company was identified at an event held at Sait Halim Paşa Palace on October 5, among
the 5 finalist innovative startup companies.
Turkey acting as the regional hub for the competition, 80 applicants from 14 different countries applied to the
SmartCamp Istanbul competition. The winner was from Romania, Skin Scan Company. Offering solutions for Smarter Healthcare, Skin Scan was named as
winner of IBM SmartCamp Istanbul 2011. Mauricio Sucasas, Director of ISV and Developer Relations, IBM Growth
Market Units presented the award. The prize for Skin Scan includes IBM mentorship for 12 weeks, and Skin Scan
will participate at the IBM SmartCamp World Finals event in early 2012, where the “IBM Global Entrepreneur of
the Year” will be identified.
Winner Company, Skin Scan founded by Romania’s leading mathematicians, dermatologists and computer engineers,
offers a cloud infrastructure for medical histories of the patients and the doctors, and aims to provide
consultancy with their services present anywhere anytime when needed by using the mobile devices more. Working
to enable to distribute their technology though the mobile telephones, Skin Scan application currently works on
iPhone without the need of any additional hardware. The application enables users to scan the moles in their
bodies and measure the skin cancer threat levels.
The other finalist companies were: 8digits Company
that offers a project providing a Smarter Web Visibility for the companies by providing analytical and live
chat solutions, ISSD Company that provides solutions
that meet the processes starting with power modules design, followed by the needed digital circuitry design and
development of application specific algorithms, finalized with transferring all software developed to the
embedded platforms, WeDecide Company that rents
platforms to companies and organizations or give them licenses, companies find opportunities to develop close
relationships with employees, customers and business partners and Egyptian E-Masary Company that provides e-Wallet business development applications and a real-
time payment gateway for the society, and thus carries out projects which enable to create new business
opportunities. At the competition, E- Masary Company won the People’s Vote Award, in an online vote via social
media on IBM’s ASmarterPlanet blog. During the
event, companies such as Management Company of METUTECH, Marjinal Porter Novelli Agency, Parklane Capital and
Endeavor Turkey also granted various awards for the finalists.
IBM SmartCamp Istanbul, part of IBM Global Entrepreneur
Program, was held in cooperation with IBM and METUTECH-BAN (Technopolis Technology Investors' Association) aiming to bring the
entrepreneurs and the related ecosystem together. Over 80 companies enrolled to the program and approximately
30 local and foreign entrepreneurs, investors and specialists provided mentorship for the enrolled competitors.
During the evaluation of the 5 finalist companies at the event, the judges were Kazım Yalçınoğlu, Member of
METUTECH-BAN, Erol Bilecik, INDEX Group CEO, Mauricio Sucasas, IBM Director of Growth Market Units, and Eogan
Jennings, Managing Partner of Parklane Capital.
Opening speeches were delivered by Jale Akyel, IBM Turkey Manager of ISV and Developer Relations, Mauricio
Sucasas, Director of ISV and Developer Relations, IBM Growth Market Units, and Prof. Dr. Volkan Atalay, Vice
Rector of Middle East Technical University. Republic of Turkey, Science, Industry and Technology Vice-Minister
Davut Kavranoglu gave a speech focusing on the importance of science and technology for Turkey’s continuous
economic growth. Minister also talked about the new incentives the government provides for new entrepreneurs in
The event was held at the Sait Halim Paşa Palace and investors, companies, independent consultants, NGOs that
focus on entrepreneurship and leaders of both private sector and public sector companies attended. The guest
speaker was Murat Sahin, Orijinal Organization, Logistics and Consulting Company, Founding Partner of. Orijinal
was the first company in Turkey to set up a private transportation and shuttle services company in Turkey and
also engaged in numerous agreements and advantage programs with the leading banks in the country. Sahin talked
about his company’s success story in details.
