My company is a large personal lines property and casualty insurer with over $130
billion in total assets and approximately 70,000 employees. We use several IBM®
Tivoli® OMEGAMON® products to monitor our 4 - way production Parallel Sysplex
running z/OS 1.12.
IMS is critical to the success of our business. Each day we process between 3 – 4
million transactions per IMS subsystem and can have up to 500 TSO users logged on.
Our business applications run across 25 Production CICS regions, a 2-way IMSPlex,
and Websphere MQ. The DEXAN feature of IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE 420 for IMS on z/OS
is heavily relied upon by our operations and systems programming personnel to
determine where and when a specific workload is encountering delays as well as
where those delays are occurring. We also like to run EPILOG™.
Our present DASD farm houses approximately 3000 Unit Control Blocks (UCB) that has
grown to 200 TB. We plan on adding additional applications to IMS in the 2nd
quarter. Along with these IMS applications, we will be adding additional DASD.
What recommendation(s) would you suggest we look into to ensure performance will
not be an issue?

I’m glad to hear how much your company relies on DEXAN and EPILOG to monitor your
enterprise. In IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE 420 for IMS on z/OS, there are several
performance enhancements for DEXAN and Epilog that you should look into. These
enhancements eliminate the scan of offline DASD and the Real-time Collector task.

For APAR OA37338, PTF UA63247 is available to address the above issue. This PTF
changes the DEXAN collector so that only online UCBs are scanned. Benchmarks run
in the Performance lab have shown up to a 20% reduction in CPU% of the Classic ASIDs
with this PTF applied.
APAR OA35150 (PTF UA58620) is for CUA. If your Operations and Systems Programming
personnel are heavy users of CUA and display the SYSTEM OVERVIEW panel, this APAR
should be APPLIED.
APAR OA37766 (PTF UA63543) is for All OMEGAMON BASE V620 users and impacts the
OMEGAMON Real-time Collector task.
APAR OA37921 (PTF UA63147) is for Epilog. Prior to this APAR, EPILOG was building
a table of all devices whether online or offline. Benchmarks run in the Performance
lab have shown up to a 33% reduction in CPU% of the Classic ASIDs with this PTF applied.
