We have designed a system of messages that run through the learning circles. It consists of a number of images, the default for each of which is a 2x2 pixel white image. When there is a notice to highlight to users, one or more of those images will be changed to include the message.
There is one message, the General Notice, that appears on every templated wiki page, and every overview page. This will be used for wide reaching important notices such as availability of developerWorks, the impact of upgrades on our learning circles and similar universal notices.
Each wiki page has a notice, so a consistent message can be applied across all pages of a type, such as a reminder to tag your profile on the Experts and Leaders pages.
Each group has a notice, stored in the individual learning circle community space, that can be applied across all pages in that learning circle, including on the learning roadmaps. This would be used for things such as announcement of events, or updated content.
The learning roadmap templates include a message board with notices, so that when a personal learning roadmap is created, it has the message board included. This has the effect that we are able to push messages out to individual learning roadmaps after they are created and keep those messages updated. We have one image per roadmap template so this can be used to highlight errors and omissions if necessary.
The images are all displayed at their original size, so some care must be taken when designing the image. A template is available with guidance for learning circle leaders here.
