How to analyze social media?
There is an inherent problem in analyzing social media. How to comprehend what the people are trying to convey? How do you decipher the sentiment of the person who conveys the message? This comes under the branch of text analysis and sentiment analysis. Text analysis encompasses pattern recognition, information extraction etc. This involves mining huge amounts of data to uncover data of significance to an organization. Sentiment analysis involves deciphering the mood of the person who conveys the message. Is he is happy, sad or angry? Another sentiment which is hard to decipher is sarcasm. What if a person says something and he means exactly the opposite? With the growing popularity of social media sentiment analysis is gaining lot of importance. With blogs, twitter, reviews etc. a company needs to keep tabs on public opinion about its product and services. The problem for example with analyzing twitter is to not only try to get the meaning of a single tweet but to get its context. This involves keeping track of entire conversation about a particular topic and how opinions are formed in the course of several tweets.
