ITCAM for Application Diagnostics Port Consolidator

ITCAM for Application Diagnostics (AD) and ITCAM for WebSphere products have a Data Collector that runs as part of Application Server process being monitored. To provide diagnostic data the Data Collector (DC) acts like a server and is queried by the Managing Server (MS) unlike many agents where data is propagated only one way from the agent to upstream components. One of the popular deployment models is to have the Managing Server inside the firewall and Data Collectors outside the firewall. This creates a problem of opening many ports (two ports for every data collector) in the firewall. It makes deployment cumbersome and also increases security risks.
To address this issue, the product is shipped with a Port Consolidator (PC). The port consolidator seamlessly integrates with other product components. It can be enabled and disabled easily. The following picture depicts the deployment architecture with port consolidator. With Port Consolidator deployed, user does not have to open two ports for every data collector any more. Only one port is opened for the Port Consolidator across the farm of monitored application servers.
Port Consolidator is a light weight process and acts as a request relay service. There needs to be one Port Consolidator process run per monitored box. It routes only incoming traffic from MS to DC. PC configuration is handled by the installer at the deployment time.
PC is started with the scripts in <DCH
– Use prox
– Use prox
– Command to start PC
– Command to stop PC
– Command to see list of ALL DCs connected to the PC
Port Consolidator Configuration File:
– PC properties file is <DCH
– Used to enable SSL and Node Authentication
– Used to bind to a specific IP in multiple NIC configuration
– All the PC related properties are configured via the installer
– No manual input needed by the user after installation
Data Collector Configuration:
In 7.1 go to <DCH
§ Set PC Host. Usually this is the same box. In multiple NIC case set the property to proper IP address
§ Set PC Port. The port on which the Port Consolidator is listening.
§ Restart PC and then DC for the new configuration to be effective
