Deployment Options for SmartCloud Monitoring 7.2 for VMware Monitoring

Customers have a few options when deploying SmartCloud Monitoring version 7.2 to monitor their VMware environment. The following describes those options and recommendations.

The VMware reports for Tivoli Common Reporting are compatible with TIP 2.2 or with the new DASH user interface. The 7.2 release included some new and improved reports. So, install the reports into your TCR server and take advantage of the enhanced reporting.
In order to use the new Dashboard for VMware and the VMware Capacity Planning tools, you must update your ITM HUB TEMS and Portal Server (TEPS) to the IBM Tivoli Monitoring 6.3. This is due to the fact that a new Dashboard REST API was added to the TEPS. When you are ready, upgrade your IBM Tivoli Monitoring environment to version 6.3. Then, you can install the new DASH servers and finally install the VMware Dashboard and Capacity Planning tools.
Since upgrading to ITM 6.3 may take a while to go through test and then production deployments, one consideration is to build a dedicated ITM 6.3 environment for monitoring your VMware environment. This would allow you to get the benefits of the VMware Dashboard and Capacity Planning tools without and extended regression test of ITM 6.3. For most customers, a very small environment could be build for this purpose. All of the ITM components can be installed on a single server, but we recommend that you place the Tivoli Data Warehouse on a dedicated database server. If you already have a Tivoli Data Warehouse, you can use that database server for this new ITM environment.
