Get started with MongoDB on IBM Power Systems running Linux
IBM® POWER8 processor-based systems were designed for various big data and analytics workloads by providing 4X more threads per core, memory bandwidth, and cache than other platform options. These benefits translate into superior performance gains for NoSQL solutions like MongoDB making it an ideal solution for managing your big data workloads on Power Systems running Linux. This article describes how to get started.
There are two options for installing and getting started with MongoDB. If you have access to an enterprise class IBM Power System (POWER8 e-class), you can leverage unused cores and memory as part of the Digital Business Start trial offer for Power Enterprise Servers with MongoDB. Follow these instructions to set up that environment: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/l-mongodb-power-cod-trs/.
Alternatively, you can proceed by downloading and installing MongoDB following these instructions below.
MongoDB has development releases available for Ubuntu 16.04 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.1 and 7.2 for IBM Power Systems. After you have the Linux installed and configured on your IBM Power server or virtual machine (VM), you can proceed with installing MongoDB.
Download the MongoDB binaries for IBM Power Systems
- Go to the MongoDB Download Center.
- For Platform, select one of these two options:
- RedHat / CentOS 7.1 ppc64le (IBM POWER)
- Ubuntu 16.04 ppc64le (IBM POWER)
- Click Download and follow the instructions in step 2, Install and start MongoDB below.
Install and start MongoDB
- Select Installation Guide.
- Follow the instructions in the MongoDB installation guide to complete the install for your Linux distribution.
- Go to the Run MongoDB Enterprise section and follow the instructions for starting, verifying, stopping and restarting MongoDB.
Get started using MongoDB
- Go to the Getting Started Guides section of the MongoDB installation guide for help with running MongoDB for various driver editions, such as Java™, Node.js, and so on (the link is located in step 5 of the Begin using MongoDB section).
- Select a guide for the programming language you're using.
- In the Overview section, click Import Example Dataset and follow the instructions for using the Restaurant data set and demo.
Set up sharding with MongoDB
MongoDB supports sharded clusters. If you determine that you need to shard, review MongoDB's recommended sharding options. Sharding will require multiple POWER servers or VMs.
