nmon Analyser
![]() |
This is an Excel spreadsheet that takes an output file from topas/nmon and produces some nice graphs to aid in analysis and report writing. It also performs some additional analyses for ESS, EMC and FAStT subsystems. It works with Excel 2003 on wards and supports 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. It does not run on Linux or the Apple Mac and the macros will not work with OpenOffice. |
Please note:
- The Analyser is not officially supported by IBM and no warrantee is given or implied. Use it at your own risk.
- No support is offered by IBM. Please post any questions you have to the forum (see link below)
- nmon analyser was the personal project of the original developer - Stephen Atkins.
- More recent improvements and from version 4 onwards are by Ron McCargar.
- Warning: for large nmon data files (10+ MB), It is high recommended that you should install 64-bit Microsoft Excel 2013 or 2016 and have a minimum of 8 GB of memory in your PC and preferably more. This removes many failures to analyse large data files.
New in Version 5 - Thanks to Ron McCargar (IBM)

- New update 50.5
- Bug fixes - 5th May 2016
- New update 5.0.2
- Added support to run nmon Analyser on a Mac with Excel 2011 or higher. Please note the following limitations:
- Pivot charts don't work,
- Merge option doesn't work.
- Fixed a problem when trying to import very large .nmon files it may fail.
- On the AAA sheet renamed the "elapsed" value given to "Analysis time" (the elapsed time it took Excel to analyze the nmon file)
- Enabling PIVOT charts would crash the analyzer on Excel 2010 and higher and has been fixed. (Analyser - PIVOT = YES)
- On the Analyser's Settings - DELIM value the user can now specify any value desired.
- In ProcessFile() added a check for EOF before doing the import to possibly avoid an error.
- Graphs that show Avg/Wavg/Max will now show Avg/Wavg on the Y1 axis and Min/Max as lines on the Y2 axis. Also if the Analyzer Output option SyncAxis is YES then the Y1 and Y2
- Several graphs were not sorted previously based on the Analyser's Settings - SORTDEFAULT value but are now.
- Added On Error Resume Next in a few spots in order to be better able to analyze huge data sets without failing prematurely.
- Added new options SHOWMACPROGRESS and SHOWLINUXCPUUTIL
- Added support to run nmon Analyser on a Mac with Excel 2011 or higher. Please note the following limitations:
Instructions for use
- Make sure you have the latest version of NMON
- Use NMON to capture data to a file (using one of the -f, -x, or -X options). This will create a file in the current directory with a name made up from
the host-name, the date, the time and with a file type of nmon. This is a comma-delimited text file with the data in snapshot order.
I recommend that you keep the number of snapshots to around 300 in order to avoid problems with over-large files. The graphs will also look better. - A good example would be nmon -f -s10 -360 (snap shot the statistics every 10 seconds for an hour). Make sure you wait just over the hour before trying to analyser the data file.
- FTP the file to your PC as an binary file (fpt "bin" option)
- Now open the nmon_analyser spreadsheet, click on the "Analyse nmon data" button and select the .nmon file
Known problems
- The WINDOWS sort command will fail if the filename or the directory name contains blanks or special characters.
