Troubleshoot a claim failed for initrd error message

During the first reboot of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, you might see the following error message:

 boot: linux
 Please wait, loading kernel...
   Elf64 kernel loaded...
 Loading ramdisk...
 Claim failed for initrd memory
 ramdisk load failed !
 ENTER called ok
 0 >

The error is caused by the malloc failing to get enough space for the initrd image. This is typically seen on Power partitions where the AIX operating system was once installed, or a diagnostics disk has been booted. Essentially the amount of free space for the boot programs has been reduced and can't support the SLES bootup image.

Try the following workaround:

In the OF prompt, type:

 dev nvram
 wipe-nvram

Now the partition should reboot.
