Mobile Cloud Services
Mobile cloud services are a discrete set of high-value middleware capabilities designed to be consumed by mobile applications. Mobile cloud services complement a mobile application platform and help accelerate and enrich mobile application development.
Key characteristics of mobile cloud services include:
1. Platform-agnostic mobile application development
2. Lightweight and easily consumed via REST APIs
3. Easy developer on-ramp via SDK
4. Hiding server-side complexity and accelerates adoption
One of the first services under the IBM mobile cloud services will be a new passes service -- a mobile marketing service that lets businesses easily engage with consumers by sending them loyalty coupons, tickets, etc. The passes service is intended to support the Apple® Passbook® app in iOS6. Passbook lets users aggregate coupons, gift card information, special offers, and purchased deals in one convenient location. The passes service will provide a pass authoring tool to create passes and an SDK for developers to personalize passes. Passes can be location driven, automatically popping up for the user with helpful and relevant information when the user nears a location of interest.
Many creative uses for passes are emerging – for example, a company could create a service for Apple Passbook that houses an employee’s security badge, allowing for quick and easy badge-free entry, while maintaining physical building security.
