Pinned topic could not start Distributed Name Server Root server - exitCode: 1

‏2013-06-18T08:01:27Z |

Hi, all,

I'm installing the InfoSphere Streams V3.0 on x86_64 platform using RHEL V6.2.

During the verifying the installation, I cannot start the sample instance. The following is the command and the output message.

(I follow the instruction in the info center to verify the installation http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/streams/v3r0/topic/com.ibm.swg.im.infosphere.streams.install-admin.doc/doc/ibminfospherestreams-install-verify.html)

[streamsadmin@bigdata092022 bigdata092022]$ streamtool startinstance -i sample

CDISC0059I The system is starting the sample@streamsadmin instance.

CDISC0078I The system is starting the runtime services on 1 hosts.
CDISC0056I The system is starting the distributed name service on the bigdata092022 host. The distributed name service has 1 partitions and 1 replications.
### FAILED TASK OUTPUT:
bigdata092022 failed
ERROR: could not start Distributed Name Server Root server - exitCode: 1

CDISC0062I The system is cleaning up after an instance did not start.
CDISC0054I The system is stopping in parallel the distributed name services of the following 1 hosts:
        bigdata092022
### FAILED TASK OUTPUT:
bigdata092022 failed
ERROR: failures stopping Name Servers.
CDISC1029W The system encountered an error. Because the --force option was specified, the operation will continue.
CDISC0055I The system is resetting the NameServiceUrl property of the instance because the distributed name service is not running.
CDISC5181E The instance did not start. The system shut down and cleaned up the instance services.

I searched the DW and there are two similar posts. I tried methods mentioned in the posts buy they didn't work.

https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/forums/html/topic?id=77777777-0000-0000-0000-000014446202

https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/forums/html/topic?id=77777777-0000-0000-0000-000014920441

I checked my ssh configuration, and also tried the command "ssh bigdata092022", it worked well, I didn't need to enter the password.

And I changed my ulimit setting to

                                open files value = 100000
max user processes value = pending signals value

             but this is helpless.

I tried command "streamtool viewlog --service boot -i instanceID --host (hostname of the name service)". And another error happened.

[streamsadmin@bigdata092022 Desktop]$ streamtool viewlog --service boot -i sample --host bigdata092022

### FAILED TASK OUTPUT:
CDISC5293E This host maps to the following host IDs in the instance configuration: bigdata092022,bigdata092022. Ensure that the instance does not contain duplicate host IDs that map to the same host, and remove any duplicate host IDs.
bigdata092022 failed

ERROR: could not get log - rc:1

There is only one host "bigdata092022" for the instance "sample". I don't know why this error happened. I tried to remove the "bigdata092022" host, but it can't be removed.

I also try using the First Step application to  verify installation, start instance or generate public keys. But all of this three task failed due to the same error "could not start Distributed Name Server Root server - exitCode: 1".

Can anyone help me with this? Lots of thanks.

Best Regards,

YuRen Su

It might be that your /etc/hosts file is not setup correctly. Can you post your /etc/hosts file?

There is also a boot log that is generated when you do a start instance. The streamtool viewlog/getlog type commands generally will capture that log. But if I understand correctly viewlog did not work, so I am assuming getlog will not work either.

If that is the case can you go to /tmp and attach the boot log for the sample instance. The name of the log will be <instance-name>@<instance-owner>.boot.log ..... for example if I created and attempted to start an instance called sample: sample@laurieaw.boot.log.

      Hi, laurieaw,

Lots of thanks for you reply. I uploaded my /etc/hosts file and the boot log under /tmp.

I saw the error information in the boot log is also as:

CDISC5293E This host maps to the following host IDs in the instance configuration: bigdata092022,bigdata092022. Ensure that the instance does not contain duplicate host IDs that map to the same host, and remove any duplicate host IDs.

I don't know why there are two hosts with the same name "bigdata092022". I only have one host.

Can you help me take a further look at this? Thank you.

Try changing your /etc/hosts file to remove the duplicated hostnames  ie:

    127.0.0.1   localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4
    ::1         localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6
    9.110.92.21 bigdata092021
    9.110.92.22 bigdata092022
    9.110.92.23 bigdata092023
    9.110.92.24 bigdata092024

    Best Regards

    Denny

      Hi, Denny,

You are right. I use your example then the instance can be started successfully. No error was found and the installation was verified successfully as well. My original hostnames did cause the problem. I meant to use "bigdata092022" as alias of "bigdata092022". But I didn't know it would be resolved as duplication. I should not use double "bigdata092022" in the host entry.

Many many thanks for your kindly help, and also @laurieaw.

      Best Regards,
