Pinned topic V7000 mirrored volume and widnows cluster

‏2013-07-16T10:36:40Z |

My customer want and SQL Server cluster enveroment,

they want put the server in two site,

and they want the storage has high availability too!

So I planed use the v7000 in two site,

and the data volume and cluster quorum volume use the v7000 mirrored volume technology!

The customer want that if one site fail both storage and server,

the service is still alive!

Is any body can tell me it my idea can meet customer's demand ?

Thanks a lot!

You cannot have Automatic failover with this setup.

If you want zero downtime in case of a SAN failure, you need to look into an N-Series Metrocluster, or a SVC Stretched cluster.

I'd suggest a solution with a Storwize V7000 on each location, with a 2-node SVC Stretched cluster in front of it. And some random storage (v3700 for exapmple) at a third location as a Quorom site.

Read the redbook on it. This one is a good place to start:

    http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg248072.pdf

Its not easy to design and setup, so ask for help from a distibutor or business partner  that have tried it, if you have no experience in it.

SVC is pretty cheap for the hardware, the expensive part is the license. The licens is per TiB. So it can be made pretty cheaply if you want high uptime for a small number of GB.

      Hi Anders:

      Thanks for your asnwers,

      but I have some question

Does V7000 not the same function as SVC?

I konw they use the sam firmware, but I don't find the stretched cluster function in v7000's redbook!

In the other word, can't v7000 create the cluster enveroment accross the IP network or internet by ip router?

So in the case,I can only choose SVC or N seies' metro-cluster?

In the storwize, you have a 2U chasis that comes with 2 controllers.

With the SVC you get 2 1U rack servers as controllers.

The difference is that you can put on 1 controller on each location with the SVC. You cannot do that with the storwize because the controllers are in the same chasis.

The Storwize software can do stretch cluster - its the hardware that cant.

          Hi Anders

          In my plan,

I will use four node cluster,

two node (one storage system with two node canister)in one site, and two node in another site!

and than this four node create one cluster!

If can do this,I will use mirrored volume techonloy, the cluster will write the mirrored volume into two storage system in two site!

          Can I do this?

Hello Allen, I'd recommend reading through the Information Center and Redbook for V7000 as it sounds like you've misunderstood what volume mirroring is/does.

BTW - its in the road map to support V7000 stretch cluster.

    not sure about dates...
