Pinned topic Deploying Win8/2012 on VMware targets

‏2013-08-21T08:03:31Z |

Hello,

According to info center at here, VM should be created with OSType "Vista 64-bit" when deploying any windows targets.

Our testing shows that Vista 64-bit works with Windows XP/2003/7/2008, but BSoD on Windows 8 (probably same with 2012).

Is there a confirmed VMware OSType which will work in all windows after the inclusion of Windows 8/2012?

I'll try to reproduce the error and report back.

In case it's the 7B error, what should I do to fix it?

You will need to see if the VMware tools are injecting for your Win8 system. If they are not, then inject them. If you are trying to use this as a golden master image, I would not inject the entire VMware Tools, rather I would get the controller drivers from a built system and create a new software module with them.

I am not convinced that it is a 7B error though as Win8 should have the correct driver. I did install Win8 on a VM, but that was a couple months ago and I do not recall if I did anything special.

I was just going through the VMware settings and it appears that for Win7 and 8, the default is to use the "LSI Logic SAS" and for Vista it is "LSI Logic". Not sure if that would cause an issue.

Just throwing a couple ideas out. Once you get the error code, it will help narrow down the issue.

Also, what version of OSD are you using?

What error code are you getting on the blue screen?

I am betting it will be the 7B error which would indicate an issue with the storage controller driver.

The root cause turns out to be VMware ESX server itself needs to be upgraded to 5.0+ to support Win8 and/or WinPE4.
