Pinned topic Storwize V3700 VSS flashcopy problem

‏2014-01-27T10:15:04Z |

I'm stucked at implementing Flashcopy manager with v3700 hardware at Windows host.

As User Guide for VSS 4.7.0 say:

http://delivery04.dhe.ibm.com/sar/CMA/SDA/048fw/0/VSS_VDS_4.7.0_UG.pdf

Create a host for the free pool of volumes.

    1. You can use the default name VSS_FREE or specify a different name.
    2. Associate the host with the worldwide port name (WWPN) 5000000000000000 (15 zeroes).
  1. Create a virtual host for the reserved pool of volumes.
    1. You can use the default name VSS_RESERVED or specify a different name.
    2. Associate the host with the WWPN 5000000000000001 (14 zeroes).

In my v3700 configuration there is NO FC adapter!!!, so i cannot create "virtual" host with WWPN, only iSCSI and SAS option present.

If i create iscsi host with name 5000000000000001 then ibmvcfg list free show nothing.

C:\Program Files\IBM\Hardware Provider for VSS-VDS>ibmvcfg.exe list all

Physical host.

Provider Type is SVC/Storwize.

Listing all volumes...

ID      Volume Name         GB        Bytes           Health   Type            Status

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

0      XXXX                512.00    549755813888    GOOD     Standard        Assigned

7       XXXX         1024.00   1099511627776   GOOD     Space Efficient Assigned

8       XXXX             150.00    161061273600    GOOD     Space Efficient Assigned

9       VSS                 300.00    322122547200    GOOD     Space Efficient Assigned

10      Vm_Test_Host2_F     100.00    107374182400    GOOD     Space Efficient Assigned

11      VSS100              100.00    107374182400    GOOD     Space Efficient Assigned

Total volumes: [12]

vDisk 11 mapped to VSS_Free host.

C:\Program Files\IBM\Hardware Provider for VSS-VDS>ibmvcfg.exe list free

Physical host.

Provider Type is SVC/Storwize.

Listing free volumes...

ID      Volume Name         GB        Bytes           Health   Type            Status

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total volumes: [0]

At customer v7000 at same configuration all ok with FC host VSS_free with WWPN 50000000000000. Flashcopy manager work and ibmvcfg.exe list free show assigned free lun list.

Anyone try use Flashcopy manager at Storwize without FC card, it's possible or it's "error by design" (request vss free "virtual" host MUST be created as fc (with wwpn)?

    Hi Mach_v,

Although there is No FC adapter in your v3700 and you can not create "virtual" host with WWPN via web GUI, you can still create "virtual" host via CLI.

Please following the steps below to create "virtual" host via CLI
    1. Please login your v3700 via SSH(e.g. PUTTY) with superuser account
    2. run this command
       mkhost -name VSS_FREE -hbawwpn 50000000000000

If there is any problem, please feel free to contact me. Beside, you can also open a ticket to IBM, so that we can track it timely.

    Thanks

Thx for info, i'm already try create host through CLI.

      IBM_Storwize:V3700_Abak2000:superuser>mkhost -name VSS_FREE -hbawwpn 5000000000000000
CMMVC5867E The action failed because the worldwide port name is already assigned or is not valid.
      IBM_Storwize:V3700_Abak2000:superuser>mkhost -name VSS_FREE -hbawwpn 1111111111111111
CMMVC5867E The action failed because the worldwide port name is already assigned or is not valid.

I'm already create ticket, but it closed with note - by log all ok, need configure host (windows) system and it's not support job help with this.

After close ticket i'm talk with head of support department, and only way to resolve is through LAB service (paid) :(

So i'm go to DW forum, because not count this support team resolve problem, and think root cause of problem at v3700 software, which hooked VSS job to WWPN virual host.

What's the firmware version of your V3700?

And if possible, could you please also provide your license status?

You'll need to add the "-force" parameter to that mkhost command, because you don't want the Storwize system to validate that it can see that host WWPN before creating it.

        Example:

        > mkhost -name VSS_FREE -hbawwpn 5000000000000000
CMMVC5867E The action failed because the worldwide port name is already assigned or is not valid.
        > mkhost -name VSS_FREE -hbawwpn 5000000000000000 -force
        Host, id [1], successfully created

Chriscanto, after adding "-force" host created successfully, and i'm see mapped LUN at free list:

          I'm at v3700 software version 7.2.0.1.

If needed i'm able copy/paste lssystem.

I'm try FlashcopyManager and successfully create copy through it.

Thanks for info about "-force" key, i'm mislooked it at CLI guide, but no hint about it at all VSS documentation.

Again, it's specific only to basic (no FC) v3700 configuration, at all other hardware all ok, because there is FC module present.

P.s. I'm looking now there is some trouble with Russian IBM support team, because it no able to resolve this problem after creating ticket and closing it with "no our problem".
