Pinned topic External virtualization for data migration

‏2014-04-15T10:12:26Z |

Hi all,

I have a DS3500 in a production platform and i want to virtualize it behind a storwize v7000 Unified. I want to use the external virtualization just for data migration so that I can replicate data between two storwizes.

In fact, I have already a storwize v7000 in the backup platform, and because the replication is not possible between DS3500 and storwize, I want to use another storwize v7000 in the production platform that will virtualize my existing DS3500 so that I can migrate data to it.

The problem is that the storwize that I want to use for external virtualization is already in use in another project. I want to know how to use it in my production platform.

Please help,

    Hi,

Kindly share below details. This will help to get answer for your question.

    1) What type of host connectivity DS3500 storage is using....??? (FC or SAS).

    2) Please share connectivity details of currently installed storages.

    Thanks.

The DS3500 that i have is SAS attached. For my storage configuration, i have the option of 8 iSCSI ports and 4 SAS ports. I know i need the DS3500 to be FC attached but i don't know what to do to have it. I mean, is there any FC adapter that i can use?

    Hi,

Please share DS3500 type model. From that we can check whether you can upgrade to FC host adapter or not. And yes we can use FC adapter to enable FC host connectivity. If we can have type and model of storage then we can get specific information.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Yes you can install FC adapter in this storage. FC adapter part number is 68Y8432 and feature code is 3611.

Kindly refer misc section in below link for more details.

    http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/xbc/cog/storagesystems/ds3512oo.html

Once you have FC connectivity available you can follow below process to virtualize this storage behind V7000.

    1) Install FC host adapter in Ds3500 storage.

    2) Connect DS3500 storage on SAN switch where V7000 storage is connected.

    3) Zone DS3500 and V7000 storage together.

    4) Define V7000 as a host in V7000.

    5) Map desired lun's from DS3500 to V7000.

Once you have all this in place there are two basic options available.

    1) Migrate data from DS3500 to V7000. Later we can format Ds3500 and can virtualize it behind V7000 for further use.

    2) Import DS3500 Lun's as image mode volumes in V7000 and directly map them to host. In this case we use V7000 internal disk space for some other purpose.

After configuring all above, you will have V7000 storage on both sites. You can then configure replication as per your requirement.

Hope this resolves your query. kindly let me know if any further details required.

    Thanks.

Kindly find below steps to virtualize DS3500 behind V7000 storage once you have this components.

    1) Install FC host adapter in Ds3500 storage.

    2) Connect DS3500 storage and related hosts on SAN switch where V7000 storage is already connected.

    3) Configure zoning between V7000 storage and Ds3500 storage. Also configure zoning between V7000 storage and hosts.

    4) Define V7000 storage as a host in DS3500 storage.

    5) Map Lun's from DS3500 storage to V7000.

This Lun's will be visible as a mdisk in V7000 storage. There are two methods available to get data from this Lun's.

    1) Migrate this Lun's on V7000 storage internal disks and then format DS3500 storage. Once DS3500 storage is formatted, then we can map new Lun's again to V7000 and use it for some other purpose.

    2) We can import DS3500 storage Lun's as a image mode Vdisk in V7000 storage and can directly map it to host for further use. V7000 storage internal disks can be used for some other purpose.

Hope this resolves your query. Kindly let me know if you need any further details on this.

It seems that IBM has withdrawn the product form marketing. It's mentioned in the link that you suggested me to look into.

Yes. But I think you should check it with your IBM representative. They should be able to help you out in this.
