Pinned topic Running z/OS EGL Cobol programs in CICS for AIX

‏2013-06-03T09:18:18Z |

Our customer decided to left zSeries(zOS) and trying to find new platform. They want to keep home made COBOL/CICS application developed using EGL .

They are considering AIX with CICS. Native COBOL apps should work in that environment (maybe with some modification) but EGL generated COBOL apps requires runtime which exists on zOS but not on AIX. Am I right? If yes, is there any other solution/suggestion ? Maybe IBM i?

Yes. You are right.  There is not Cobol Runtime for AIX.

A solution would be EGL generating Java apps and call COBOL/CICS on Aix.

IBM i is also a solution, but while not an issue, it is not a transactional system like CICS.  This mainly means the user process does not go away during user think time, so you just have to plan accordingly.   In general it is much easier to move from CICS to IBM i with EGL than the other way around.

Also, if you would consider some form of conversion, you could work with the partner named Synchrony Systems who can convert the 3270 CICS apps to RUI apps that then can be deployed as EGL generated Java under WAS or Tomcat on AIX.
