Pinned topic Thin provision Lun Real Size versus Free Space VMware Datastore

‏2014-02-19T10:38:16Z |

Hello,

We are working with a Storwize V7000 with thin provisioned luns.

There is a thing that I don't get with the sizes shown in the Storwize V7000 and in VMware.

On the properties for a lun it shows that it is using 1.07TB of space of the 1.95TB (see print screens)

Which means there is 901GB of free space in this lun.

When you check that same datastore in VMware, it shows that this lun has only 635GB of free space.

So the datastore in VMware uses 1.32TB while on the Storwize that datastore only consumes 1.07TB.

note: there is no compression activated

Does anyone know where that difference comes from?

Thank you in advance

Thats the Whole idea of thin provisioned storage. You only take up Space that is actually used.

VMWare reports Space used by VM's. If some VM's are thick provisioned, it will allocate the Space from the start.

The storwize reports the Space actually used. So a thick provisioned VM will not take up all the Space from the start.

The storwize also reclaim empty Space as free Space. VMWare dont. This can also create a difference, even if all VM's are thin provisioned in VMWare.
