Pinned topic Cobol for Linux on Power

‏2014-07-16T01:14:56Z |

Hey guys, could you please help me find, if they exist, Cobol compilers for Linux on Power? Preferably for POWER7+/8 servers and specifying if they work with PowerVM or PowerKVM.

Thanks!

At least, there is no IBM Cobol compiler on pLinux.  Not sure if there is open source project on this.

However, there is IBM Cobol compiler on AIX (Power).

No,  IBM does not offer COBOL compiler on Power Linux.  But we have that on AIX.

Let me try to build gnu-cobol for you :)

I tested Gnu Cobol on Ubuntu 14.04 and it passed all tests provided within the source code.

However, I don't think it's officially supported by any enterprise Linux distribution.

    Checking now.

The "environment", be it a PowerVM LPAR, a PowerKVM guest, or even non-virtualized, is not applicable - but which distribution (RHEL, SLES, Ubuntu) will be.

    More details about my test:

     - ppc64le

Yes, it builds fine. For later distros BE and LE. For older distros, spec needs to be hacked a little bit.

I've dropped a mail to package maintainers

    Checking with the client's CTS...

Thanks! I reported this. Though I think they are looking for a supported approach. I'll let you know if they decide to proceed with the open source approach.

Marcos, if you have a client request for an IBM Cobol compiler on AIX, you can submit those internally inside IBM.  Reach out to me and I'll show you the "magic" place to submit this and make internal introductions.

I'm asking the CTS to explore the AIX option. I'll let you know. Thanks!
