Pinned topic IBM Installation Toolkit restore option is giving internal server error

‏2013-06-28T09:22:38Z |

Hello,

One of our customer in India has bought PowerLinux 7R2 servers,

They had POC system by IBM where they had RHEL5.X instances running.

Hence they wanted to port the existing OS instance by cloning and restore option in IBM IT http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/lopdiags/installtools/download/home.html

They were able to clone the instance and restore as well to one of the new server, but they are facing issue in restoring same nfs dumped cloned image to another server of same config,

After booting to Live CD of IBM-IT, assigning IP, wizard mode and selecting restore path, (entering exact url)

They are able to see the remoted cloned image which when tried to proceed, they are getting error.

    Hi.

There is a workaround for this issue. The issue happens because the disk has no partition table yet. There is some ways to create a partition table for the target disk where the image will be restored:

    1) A) Boot your IBM Installation Toolkit Live DVD at the target system where the image will be restored
       B) Go to the Rescue mode (option 2)
       C) Run the following command:

         parted --script <disk> mklabel msdos

where <disk> is the device where the image will be restored, for example, /dev/sda

       D) Run 'welcomecenter' and use the Restore option

    2) At the Rescue mode you can also use the 'fdisk' tool and create a partition, this way the partition table will be automatically created. Any partition will do, it will be later deleted by the restore operation

We will change our code, so this procedure (creation of a partition table for a clean disk) will be automatically done by a later IBMIT version.

    Thanks,

    Anibal.

      Thanks for the quick update,

After this work around we are able to solve the above error (proceed to next level), but, after selecting restore option, the tool kit does not show any progress at all.

the screen is complete blank, after hours of waiting we had to restart the lpar again with IBM-IT Live session and surprised to find that our manually created HDD partition via fdisk utility is as it is and no data was restored.

We tried this multiple times to restore with workaround and also we tried to restore with a newly created cloned image from a working system.

      Regards,

Please let us know which browser and version is being used. We will try to reproduce the issue in our environment and try to find a workaround for it.

        Thanks.
