Pinned topic Download DB2 Express-C 10.5

‏2013-06-17T19:26:09Z |

DB2 Express-C 10.5 is now available for download. Express-C is the free edition of the DB2 database.

Unlike the competitor express offerings, DB2 Express-C does not impose any additional low limits on the size of your databases over other editions of DB2. The new DB2 Express-C 10.5 release also relaxes its memory restriction by 400%. It will now use up to 16GB of memory.

DB2 Express-C can handle database of any size, it can be used in production, and it can be redistributed with your applications.

Next steps

    Are you sure that this version can handle database of any size?

    According to this doc:

    Program charges: DB2 10.5 Express-C can be used for development and deployment at no charge. It can be installed on x64-based physical or virtual systems and may use up to a maximum of 2 processor cores and 16 GB of memory with no more than 15 terabytes of user data per database

    This is good news. Lets hope these changes allow for more projects to consider DB2.

    I am interested in this question too. Is there upper limit in 10.5 in database size ?

    @ada4ko: You're right, aside from DB2 Enterprise and Advanced Enterprise, there is a general DB2 for LUW limit of 15,000 GB. I was referring to the much lower database size limits (e.g. 4 GB) imposed by some competitor products. I have edited the original post.

    There is a known issue with installing DB2 10.5 on Windows XP 32-bit. You will receive a "setup.exe is not a valid win32 application" error. It is caused by a change in Visual Studio 2012 which is used to build DB2 10.5. Microsoft dropped support for older 32-bit operating systems in Visual Studio 2012.

    Windows XP is not a supported platform at this time:

    If I am not mistaken, Microsoft resolved the issue with support for targeting XP in VS 2012 Update 1 (late 2012) .

    See vsupdate_KB2707250.exe

    I tried installing the VS2012 (sp3) runtime on XP, but no joy.

    According to this blog, I think IBM would need to modify their build environment to use the XP support in vs2012sp1:

    http://tedwvc.wordpress.com/2012/11/27/visual-studio-2012-update-1-released-real-official-xp-targeting-support/

    i.e. there is nothing we end users can do.  If anyone figures something out, I would love to hear about it.

    I encountered the same issue with Win2003 (both 32 & 64-bit).

    And the IBM doc calls out the removal of support for XP, Win2003, as well as Vista & Win2008 (non-R2):

    http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/db2luw/v10r5/topic/com.ibm.db2.luw.wn.doc/doc/i0056204.html

    So I think running 10.5 on XP or 2003 is a lot cause.. sigh.

    Maybe consider running 10.5 in a virtual box session under centos or a Google or Amazon VPS ?

    DB2 Text Search (db2ts) seems to have been omitted

    (not available to select and apparently is not included by default either)

    from both the Linux and Windows DB2 10.5 Express-C install.

    I can't find this mentioned as a conscious choice in the DB2 10.5 docs.

    Any ideas what might have happened?

    ~~~~~~~~~
    Windows log file:
    Property(C): CONFIGURE_TEXT_SEARCH = 1
    Property(C): p_enableTextSearch = 0
    Property(C): p_textSearchBackFlag = HealthMonitor_noEx
    Property(C): p_TextSearchPortNumber = ___NotSet___
    Property(C): PROP_RSP_DB2.TEXT_SEARCH_HTTP_PORT_NUMBER = ___NotSet___
    Property(C): p_TextSearchServiceName = ___NotSet___
    Property(C): PROP_RSP_DB2.TEXT_SEARCH_HTTP_SERVICE_NAME = ___NotSet___
    Property(C): DEFAULT_TEXT_SEARCH_SERVICE_NAME = db2j_DB2
    Property(C): DEFAULT_TEXT_SEARCH_SERVICE_PORT = 55000
    ~~~~~~~~~

    Linux log does not mention anything at all
