Pinned topic IBM customized ESXi 5.5 1331820 hardware status bug

‏2014-03-04T13:38:35Z |

Hi,

I have just installed IBM customized ESXi 5.5 and noticed in the Hardware status tab, Storage components are missing. See attached picture.

Storage components are visible in the old 5.1U1 so I'm pretty sure it's a bug with the new version.

Any idea how to fix this ?

Regards.

ESXi 5.5 Update 1, but IBM hasn't released their customized install for it yet.

I can confirm this can be fixed by applying 5.5 Update 1 from Vmware, don't have to wait for IBM custom install.

What concerns me about this, however, is that ServerProven does not list 5.5u1 as supported on System x servers, whether from IBM's customizable or from VMware.  (Doesn't mean it won't work, just not listed as supported)

I wouldn't be concerned. ServerProven and Redbooks take time to catch up in publication, sometimes many months. When the IBM customized 5.5 Update 1 installer is released, that will most likely jog the amendment to both.

Thank you Dave.  I would be comfortable with this update1 if it was my server, but handing this to our client without IBM's affirmation makes me nervous.  Like any technical support center, not just IBM, if there is an issue within the vSAN that has to have 5.5u1, they will point at the Golden Book (ServerProven), and back out of the support assistance.  I have asked local FTSS if they can get IBM to give the thumbs-up on this. Take care. Bruce

    Hi Bruce,

Certainly, there's that "official" level of comfort with any environment. Since vSphere vSAN is a feature of the 5.5 hypervisor though (just responding to your example), you would really want to call VMware for support, not IBM. You would only call IBM if you had IBM-specific driver or hardware issues, or any other vendor's hardware (Dell, HP) for that matter. Now if VMware bounced you around, that would be interesting. They're usually extremely helpful. All that being said... this would at least serve as a reminder that 5.5 Update 1 is brand-new, so some restraint is usually recommended ;) unless there's a burning need to have it and be bleeding edge.

I'd say the purpose of this thread is a bit off topic, however, while a good conversation ;) (Joe should mark Eric's response as the answer! *wink wink*!)

    Regards,
    Dave

I would have marked it if I can find that option. Been looking all over this web page. Maybe I'm going blind.

It appears that newer ESXi-5.5.0-1746974-IBM-20140428.iso from IBM has the same hardware status bug.  The iso is patched with both Update1 and the Heartbleed security patch.  It doesn't appear that IBM ever released an ESXi 5.5 iso with just Update1.

IBM hasn't released the 5.5 Update 1 customized installer; what you might be using is just 5.5 that includes the Heartbleed remediation. The hardware status bug isn't fixed until Update 1, but that is not an IBM issue, it was a problem native to 5.5 which VMware corrected in 5.5 Update 1. I've safely applied the native 5.5 Update 1 over a 5.5 customized installation, and will just apply the provider updates from the new installer once it comes out. So at least that fixes the hardware status bug. Expectation is end of the month for the 5.5 Update 1 customized installer release.

You're right.  I mixed up the build numbers (1746018 vs 1746974).
