Pinned topic M5015 BBU Learn Problem - IBM Firmware vs LSI Firmware

‏2013-05-29T06:22:11Z |

Hi,

I contacted the French IBM support but they are totally incompetent, so I ask my question here.

We have about 500 x3550M3 / M5015 / BBU. We have problem with BBU since the begining (defect, learning failed ...)

LSI released there is some months firmware version 12.12.0-0139 which contains a fix for our latest bug "SCGCQ00313883 - Battery continually stating Battery Yearly Deep Discharge Relearn Pending. Please Initiate a manual Relearn" (they also released 12.13.0-0154 recently)

IBM released the firmware 12.12.0-0133 and now 12.13.0-0153. But there is nothing in the IBM changelog about all fix from LSI of the 12.12.0-0139. Is IBM have took these fix into account ??

Regards,

Historically, I have found that if you look into the actual firmware package versions that you can usually match them to what LSI releases. In other words, there's a very good chance that the fixes in the LSI firmware will also be found in the IBM firmware of matching versions.

Likewise, reviewing the latest LSI firmware fix list will usually tell you what could be broken in IBM's latest version (assuming LSI is newer than IBM). I'm experiencing at least three issues that LSI has fixed for the M5110e (LSI 2208 RoC), but that IBM hasn't released their own firmware for yet.

I have the same error Controller ID:  0  Battery requires reconditioning; please initiate a LEARN     cycle but the MSM software shows the battery is healthy.

I could not find any documentation on invoking a Learn process

      Is the message erroneous?

This message can occur if it has been a long time since a Relearn cycle has been completed. The controller wants to know that the battery pack can sustain a charge for the time it needs to in the event the power fails.

If you load the latest MSM software (v12 or v13), you can initiate a relearn of the battery fairly easily through the "physical" tab in MSM (right-click BBU -> start manual learn process).

        Here's the link to MSM v13: http://www.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5077712&brandind=5000008&myns=x008&mync=E
