Pinned topic Multisite between 7.1.1 and 8.0 sites

‏2014-02-28T07:17:58Z |

We have 5 sites with clearcase 7.1.1 and 3 sites on 8.0.

We cannot upgrade 7 to 8 as of now.

We have to sync all the sites.

Will there be any compatibility or sync or version sync issues of we configure multisite between all the sites, both 7 & 8 versions ?

Can we Multisite all the sites if all VOBs are in the same schema level ?

    Thanks Avinash.

    In this scenario,

Sync VOBs in 7.1..1.X to 8.0

We do not have any VOBs in 8.0 sites (all the 8.0 sites are upgraded from 7.X.X.X) that are replicated from 7.1.1.X site.

Now we have to create a new VOB replica for the 7.1.1.X site to be shipped to 8.0 sites for establishing a new replica.

If we multisite the 7.1.1.X VOBs to 8.0 site are we going to encounter any kind of compatibility or technical issues ?

what should we take steps to sync the VOBs in 7.1.1.X to 8.0 as 50 % parts of the development activity is moved to sites with 8.0.

The Master 7.1.1.X site VOBs are to be there for a while undisturbed.

    Hello Releasecm,

    Good day.

The compatibility problem would be coming into picture if the VOB is first created in CC 8.0.x machine and then replicated to the CC 7.1.x machine.

But if the VOB is initially created in 7.1.x machine and when replica is created that replica creations when imported in the CC 8.0.x version, the replica will be created with the lower feature level itself.

You need to be careful when the VOB is initially created in the CC 8.0 to make sure to maintain the lower feature level as mentioned in the TN.

    Thanks,

    Avinash

    Hello ReleaseCM,

    Good day.

The VOB's can Sync between the Version 7.x and Version 8.x ClarCase setup only if the VOB's created in the Version 8.x server are of Feature level lesser than 8.

Following techdoc has the discussion about how this can be achieved:

    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21586555

So you need to create the VOB's in the Version 8.x ClearCase servers at Feature level 5 using the -flevel switch in the mkvob command.

But you need to plan for upgrading the ClearCase setup to Version 8.x and above as ClearCase 7.x is going end of support this April 2014.

    Thanks,

    Avinash S

    Thanks Avinash.

How does having single domain affect the multisite implementaiton ?

We can implement bi-directional multisite in a single domain authenticated distributed sites.

What are the pros and cons of having a single domain authenticated multsite environment ?

Where can we get documentation or reference on domain authentication ?

Well, I'm not Avinash, but maybe I can answer.

I am going to assume Windows, and that each site has a local domain controller with for the domain in question. But the same would be true if you had an your VOB servers were using a replicated NIS/LDAP configuration.

If you keep all your client accounts and servers in a single domain, it allows you to use identity preserving replicas. That's really it. Ownership information (and not just permissions) is preserved across replicas. if you use the same VOB owner account, creating the replicas will generally go without a hitch as the VOB's additional group list will be prepopulated with the VOB owner's group list.

    Some potential gotchas:

    1. The VOB servers have to be running the same platform type (all Unix or all Windows), and all must be able to look up accounts in the domain that contains the user accounts. This can limit your options for VOB server deployments.
    2. If the VOB owner account is not a member of a group that owns elements in the VOB, you have to: a) run the mkreplica import with -ignoreprot; b) add the group after the fact; and c) run a checkvob -pool -protections -fix afterwards. This is because the replica creation packet does not list contain the group list for the exporting VOB.
    3. If this is actually a multidomain environment, and one or more of those domains do not have local domain controllers, performance issues could occur with frightening regularity.

    Thanks Brcowan,

<This can limit your options for VOB server deployments.> ==> What are the limitations ?

This is a single domain implementation with trusteeship.

The biggest limit is that you can't change your deployment platform from Windows -> Unix or vice versa at ANY location if you want to keep using identity preserving replicas at all sites. Since native credentials are passed between identity preserving replicas, syncs would start failing if such a platform shift was done.
