Pinned topic V3700 disk firmware

‏2013-10-16T20:31:41Z |

Hi there, in applying the latest update of the SAN controller firmware, while doing its pre-installation it told me the firmware on the actual disk is not the recommended level.

This tool has found the internal disks of this system are not running the recommended firmware versions. Details follow:

+----------------------+-----------+------------+-------------+
| Model                | Latest FW | Current FW | Drive count |
+----------------------+-----------+------------+-------------+
| ST91000640SS         | BD2F      | BD2A       | 3           |
| MK1401GRRB           | SC29      | SC27       | 3           |
+----------------------+-----------+------------+-------------+

We recommend that you upgrade the drive microcode at an appropriate time. If you believe you are running the latest version of microcode, then check for a later version of this tool. You do not need to upgrade the drive firmware before starting the software upgrade.

However, no info anywhere on how I'm supposed to perform the firmware upgrade on the disks. While lots of info is available on the firmware upgrade for the controller, I can't find any info on the IBM web site on how to upgrade the disk firmware.

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Typing 'V3700 disk firmware download' into Google, the top result was:

Supported Drive Types and Firmware Levels for IBM Storwize V3500 and IBM Storwize V3700

    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S1004229

That looks like a good starting point; there are drive code download links at the bottom of the page.

It's true that Google is by far an easier way to find any link compared to the IBM search function, however, there are no instructions on how to update the actual firmware on the disk drives.

The only instructions are just to update the firmware on the controllers, which I have done twice now. And each time I run the pre-installation tool, it tells me the firmwar on the actual drives is out of date. However, nothing on how to actually update that firmware, or whether the controller firmware will update the drive firmware at the same time.

Have you updated the firmware of the disk drives on this unit?

Drive firmware is not updated by the system (machine code) upgrade process, it is updated using a different method.

The V3700 Information Center should provide all the info:
