Pinned topic TSAMP versus VMware DRS / HA with SAP

‏2016-06-08T11:08:36Z | samp sap vmware

Hello,

our company is providing up to 200 SAP systems. The department responsible for this uses the Flexpod Stack using components from Cisco (Computer, Network) und Netapp (Storage). Virtualizing is done with VMware. Recovery with VMware DRS and HA.

I don't know the cababilities of VMware but how SAMP can complete or add (the) functionality? I remember, that SAMP has a SAP policy but I'm not sure wether it is "state of the art". Do you have some more imformation?

Regards

Ruediger

    Hello Andreas,

I'm a little bit confused. I read some of the documents but still is not clear what ist SAP HA in compared with SAMP? Is it an own feature of SAP or is it the same thing?

Perhaps we should hve a short call if possible?

    Regards

    Ruediger

    Hello Ruediger,

    sorry for the confusion.

The term "SA MP has the SAP HA feature" refers to the SA MP optional product feature "SAP high availability policy feature".
    http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSRM2X_4.1.0/com.ibm.samp.doc_4.1/sampicsappolicyfeature.html

The term "SAP HA Connector" refers to the SAP profile configuration parameter "service/halib".
This is explained in the SA MP - SAP HA policy configuration chapter "Enabling the SAP high availability Connector".
    http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSRM2X_4.1.0/com.ibm.samp.doc_4.1/sampicsaphaconnector.html

The SAP Note 1693245 - SAP HA Connector Library - lists the required SAP kernel patch levels.
    http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1693245

I will drop you a note to schedule the call.

    Regards

    Hello Ruediger,

SA MP 4.1. ships with fast failover high availability support for SAP systems running production workloads. As always with SA MP you can plan the SAP systems with the same HA features for AIX on Power and Linux running on Intel, Power and System z hardware.

For any SAP systems running in production with fast recovery times, you must consider at least the following software parts:

    1. SAP Central Services
SA MP has the SAP HA feature with HA policy wizards for the SAP Central Services setup types ABAP, Java and Double-Stack.
    http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSRM2X_4.1.0/com.ibm.samp.doc_4.1/sampicpart4sapha.html
The SAP Enqueue Server is the most important part and must replicate its in-memory Lock Table to the SAP Enqueue Replication Server on the hot standby node. It will take a long recovery time if this Lock Table must be rebuild from the Database.

    2. SAP Application Servers and SAP WebDispatcher/SAProuter
SA MP has the SAP HA feature with HA policy wizard options for the SAP Netweaver Application Servers (ABAP, Java and Double-Stack) and for the SAP WebDispatcher/SAProuter.
At least two Application Servers should be configured and an HA setup for the SAP WebDispatcher/SAProuter should be in place.
    https://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw73ehp1/helpdata/en/48/99ac3a7f020e27e10000000a421937/content.htm

    3. Database
    a) DB2 ships with the build-in SA MP HA option.
    http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSEPGG_10.5.0/com.ibm.db2.luw.qb.server.doc/doc/c0051342.html

    b) SAP HANA ships with support for the following high availability options:
      - Storage Replication, cold start on standby, with long recovery time (good for data backup and DR)
      - Host Auto-Failover, cold start on standby, with long recovery time (low budget HA)
      - System Replication, hot standby, with fast failover for production workload (requires HA cluster)
SA MP has the SAP HA feature with an HA policy wizard for SAP HANA System Replication.
    http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSRM2X_4.1.0/com.ibm.samp.doc_4.1/sampicpart4sapha_HANA.html

    4. NFS Server
One of the important parts in the SAP setup is the NFS server.
SA MP has the SAP HA feature with an HA policy wizard for the NFS server high availability.
    http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSRM2X_4.1.0/com.ibm.samp.doc_4.1/sampicnfs_high_availability_pol.html

    Note:
SAP added an SAP HA Connector configuration option to integrate external HA cluster software into the SAP tool stack.
SA MP with the SAP HA feature does exploit this SAP HA Connector for the integration of the complete SAP tool stack.

Please let me know if you have more questions.

    Regards

    Andreas
