Pinned topic Upgrade to WXS 8.6.0.1?

‏2013-06-10T09:57:10Z |
Hi,

I am planning to upgrade my WXS 8.5 environment to 8.6.0.1 in order to solve couple of existing issues.

On going through the infocenter and other docs, the steps suggest to upgrade the servers in following sequence.

Catalog Server-> Container Server-> WXS Clients (in order)

I would like to know is the above procedure has to be followed rigorously or I can first migrate the clients and then proceed with the servers. Would this make any concern?

Also I was curious to know that does WXS 8.6 clients support back-end compatibility which means does WXS 8.6 client support WXS 8.5 Catalog and Container Servers.

All suggestions are welcome!

Since 7.1.1 it is possible to have any combination of catalog, container, and client versions so what you are stating should be allowed.  Previously the prescribed way to upgrade was catalog servers, container servers and then clients as you stated.  Your plan to update the client first though is perfectly fine.

During development of 8.6.0.2 we did discover some additional interoperability issues between 8.5 and 8.6.  For a more seamleess upgrade, I would recommend using 8.6.0.2.  8.6.0.2 is planned to be available very soon.

One thing about 8.6 that you cannot do is have a mix of eXtremeIO (XIO) with ORB.  For upgrading you must continue to use ORB.  In order to use XIO you need to take your grid completely down since XIO and ORB do not know how to communicate with each other.

I hope that answers all your questions.  If not, let us know any more questions you have.

      Thanks Jared for the reply.

      This answers all my queries.

Is there any tentative date by which 8.6.0.2 would be available, so that I can wait for the same for  direct upgradation to the latest release(8.6.0.2)?

I cannot give you an exact date.  It is planned to be available in the next week, but it is subject to change if something comes up.

8.6.0.2 fixpack is now available for download.  You can find the details here.  There will be a forum update later in the day or two with more details about the release being available, but wanted to give you an update since you were asking for when it would be available.

              Thanks Jared for the reply.

The details you pointed out were helpful.

Just a query, I was wondering what issues are being fixed in the 8.6.0.2. I have gone though some of the docs on the net but could not find this info.

Could you please point that out, it would be helping in working with this fix 8.6.0.2

      Jared/Lisa,

      I have one more question.

Could I make WXS 8.5 clients to communicate to 8.6.0.1 servers?

I have WXS 8.5 clients which needs to be communicated to 8.6 servers.  I would like to know the best practices for the WXS client and server( which is 8.6.0.1 currently)  version to communicate effectively with one another.

      Thanks.

        Devendra,

There were some additional interoperability fixes that were made in 8.6.0.2 for communicating with 8.5.0.x.  I would recommend that you run with 8.6.0.2 for interoperability scenarios.
