Pinned topic x3690 Not Booting with 16GB Memory

‏2013-11-04T22:56:13Z |

I have two x3690's that I am trying to install ESXi 5.1. When I install 16GB memory sticks, ESXi hangs at the kernel initialization. If I use 8G sticks of memory, everything works properly.

x3690 x5 MT 7148

Two Intel x6550 (8 core) processors

Memory tray installed

Minimal memory (4 x 16GB sticks), slots 1, 8, 17 & 24

Memory - 16GB PC3-8500R 4Rx8 (IBM part # 46c7477)

Any ideas why it won't boot or complete a memory test? Is there a BIOS setting that should be set?

If it stops at loading ESXi then it is gone past the POST. Is there any errors in IMM ?

Is this behavior is only with ESXi/ have you tried other OS.

Windows 2008 R2 also does not load. There are no problems within IMM. If I use a memory checker (memtest 86+ 5.0.1), when it reaches a certain point of the memory test, the server reboots. I can reduce the total number of memory sticks to 4, and still see the same problem. If I use 4G or 8G sticks, I don't have this problem. It is only with 16G sticks. I am using 16G PC3-8500 4rx4 memory.

It means that the failure/misbehavior follows the memory. Have you tried these 16gb dimm's with single processor without memory tray & removing slot2 processor. I feel you may have to raise a service request with IBM
