Pinned topic RMC Connection issue between HMC and LPAR

‏2014-06-04T19:59:56Z |

Hello,

I have a P570 server and an HMC.
Here is my configuration :
- HMC is configured on eth0 in subnet LAN1, and on eth1 in subnet LAN2
- VIOS IP address is in LAN1
- LPAR1 and LPAR2 are in LAN1
- LPAR3 and LPAR4 are in LAN2

I cannot succeed to establish a RMC connection between the HMC and LPAR3 & LPAR4 for dynamic configuration.

Private network between HMC and FSP from P570 is OK.
Everything is OK on LAN1.

For LAN2 :
ping is OK between LPARs and HMC in both ways.
telnet on port 657 is OK from LPARs to HMC.

When I add a 2nd network interface on LPAR3 and LPAR4 with LAN1 IP addresses, RMC connection is OK !!

But I didn't find any document saying it has to be in the same network.
So is it possible to have LPARs in different subnets, and all linked to the HMC ?
And how to do this ?

Thanks for any help.
Marc.

Nothing jumps out at me yet.....

    • what version of HMC ?
    • please log into the HMC (e.g.  ssh hscroot@_________ ) and post the output from:
      • lspartition -dlpar
      • netstat -rn
      • netstat -ive
      • netstat -na | grep 657

    - HMC is configured on eth0 in subnet LAN1, and on eth1 in subnet LAN2

HMC is on both LAN1 and LAN2  ?  This seems odd but might be ok.  Which ethXX is PRIVATE ? and which ethXX is OPEN ?

Private network between HMC and FSP from P570 is OK.

It might well be ok, BUT which ethXX is being used for this network ? Are you using something like eth2 ? eth3 ? or ??

    1. Check which interface HMC uses for DLPAR traffic - use "lspsm" and "lshmc -n" commands on HMC.

    2. Check what AIX knows about HMC - use "lsrsrc IBM.MCP" command in AIX.

    3. Verify that AIX and HMC agree on the interface/address they are using.

    4. Make sure your firewall settings allow 657/UDP and 657/TCP between HMC interface and AIX interface.

    5. Perform usual RMC reset on AIX ("rmcctrl zAp") and HMC ("lspartition -dlparreset"). Wait some time (say 15 minutes).

    6. Perform actions 1. and 2. to verify information between AIX and HMC was successfull.

    7. Verify "lspartition -dlpar" output on HMC.

    8. In case of trouble check 657/UDP and 657/TCP traffic - use "tcdump" in AIX.

    Thank you for your replies.

I spent a few hours to get it work, but it wasn't enough. I read somewhere I needed to wait for 5 or 10 minutes in order to have RMC connections established. Should it be 5 or 10 hours instead ? In any case, this morning, RMC connections were all OK, using the network I desired.

    For your information :

    > lshmc -V
    "version= Version: 7
     Release: 3.4.0
     Service Pack: 0
    HMC Build level 20081204.1
    MH01152: Required fix for HMC V7R3.4.0 (12-04-2008)
    ","base_version=V7R3.4.0
    "

eth0 and eth1 are open networks. Private network is on eth2 for the FSP.

The HMC is plugged on LAN2 only for RMC connection. The 4 LPAR cannot be on the same subnet.
