Pinned topic CCL-BIT-0008 error

‏2013-03-20T16:40:49Z |
I have working Cognos 10.2 64 bit on a windows 64 bit 2008 server single server working as production environment. Recently upgraded to this from 8.4.1 32 bit. IIS 7.5 is the webserver. Data source is MSAS cube and ever since we upgraded, we get that random error from any kind of browser. Next time when you click, it disappears and the report runs fine. Anyone has any idea? I thought it could be with the reports not validating properly (they were not) and then I fixed all the XML validation errors. Users still intermittently get this error.
Also happens with any report for any user including me as administrator.
Audit.RTUsage.RSVP Response Report ReportService Failure CCL-BIT-0008 The following HTTP POST statement has the wrong HTTP version: CCL-BIT-0008 The following HTTP POST statement has the wrong HTTP version:>folder</objectClass><searchPath xsi:type="xsd:string">/content/folder/folder/

A little update : I am able to reproduce the error at will. When Framework manager is still open on my laptop after I've published a new version of a pack, the error occurs when I open the report in R.Studio and it tries to validate against the new pack. Looks like there are 2 different sessions open and it doesn't like it.

So SSO + multi-session looks to me as the culprit. Problem, I love SSO and people get used to it so I won't disable it. Multi-session, well it's not obvious to prevent all the user from opening many tabs nor many Internet Explorer instances.

I haven't tried the cache test provided that it seems like only one user is complaining from having the error frequently and it's the report author, he can do single-session for a while and I'm reluctant to penalize all other users...

    Hope it helps...

Just got back from a vacation after 10 days. There is something to note. When I was leaving for vacation 10 days ago, I did go back to check the settings and somehow cache was reverted back to 10 percent as before. I left it as it is not to make changes while I was gone. Now checking the log file, I don't see this error since 7th July. At this point, I am not sure what fixed it but I believe whatever Dan asked me to do. I am about to upgrade to 10.2.1 and it will be interesting to see how that goes.

Won't be a great help but you are not alone, I'm also having this intermitent error, also upgrade recently from 8.4 to 10.2 and also in Windows 2008 64 bits version to COGNOS gateway included.

Did you ever figured it out?

At least I know it is not just me alone. Unfortunately we never got this resolved. I still have a ticket pending with IBM and it is with the developers now. They did send me a couple of tweaks that did not work. It looks like your environment and mine are exactly similar. I do see this error in the log like 4 or 5 times a day on a daily basis. I am really curious to upgrade to 10.2.1 to see if that helps.

Out of curiosity, what is your data source?

Finding the cause could be key to this. May be you and me can come up with something. What is your web-server? Have you customized any settings? I use IIS 7.5. The error happens only with Cognos viewer and soon you click on the hyperlink. Next click, it vanishes. It happens with any browser, any user.

A couple of questions if I may:

Which gateway are you using?  CGI or ISAPI 32 or 64 bit?  If you are on 10.2 not 10.2.1 then you would have executed the batch file to switch the bit depth.

Did this happen in your previous release?  Did you use the tomcat applicaton server for this and the previous release?

I use ISAPI 64 bit as gateway on 10.2.  I am not clear on the second part of your question but I think I had to do something to 64bit to work.

It did not happen in the previous release (we upgraded from 8.4.1 32bit to 10.2 64 bit) and we did use default Tomcat as application server as well.

User get the error on a daily basis. Since they get the reports to work the second click or so, they don't say anything anymore. As a system admin, I get the error as well although I rarely use Cognos viewer for anything.

To get the 64 bit ISAPI you would have had to run the CopyGateMod 64bit command from within the CGI-BIN directory .

When you or the user's get the error, what is the load like on the system?  Are there a lot of people on the system or does this happen regardless of the system usage?

Sorry, Just read the second part of your message. It happens regardless of system usage. It has been happening since day 1 of install and in both development and production. It also happens regardless of package/report. I could reproduce the error using Cognos sample reports. Also I did get the error when I tried directly against the dispatcher. So I don't think it is the gateway. I do believe it is either the 64 bit Cognos 10 or the windows 2008 64 bit environment that has some setting needs adjusted. I have tried disabling firewall as well. Everything is 64 bit except for report server execution mode is set as 32 bit. I wonder if this is a defect but I can't change settings or else all the reports will fail. I should have just stuck to 32 bit version, may be!

I am running 10.2 64 bit on 2008 in a production system without seeing any of these errors.  In addtion past experiences around the CCL-BIT error family has almost always been related to some form of resource contention (Network, Port, Memory) on the dispatcher machine.

The fact you state that this happens regardless of system usage is a bit disturbing.  Next time this error happens, can you do a screen capture of the task manager showing the number of cgs*, Bibus*, and Java* items and the amount of memory they consume.

Can you also launch a cmd window and do a netstat -a | more and count the number of TCP Wait states that are on your disptacher port.

and Sorry I have a few more quesitons:

What is your architecture, signle server, multi server  (If its multi server can you explain what is where please.)

What is your current threading model, aka number of report servers, batch servers and their high and low affninity.

Are you using the Dynamic Query Mode for any reporting.

Depending on the answers above, my next step is to scale back the BI system resource footprint to see if it has any affect on the error.

You don't need to apologize for asking questions to troubleshoot my issue:-) Actually more you ask, it is starting to shed some light on this. The hardest part is capturing the task manger as it happens. Since I am the only repor author, I use Report Studio and I never this error running reports from any studio. However I do run into other issues (now it makes sense to think they are all related to resource allocation) like report prompt won't come up for a long time and end up with the corrupted dispatcher  (DPR-ERR-2022) error but the next click would be fine. From Cognos viewer, users run into this as well. Although they don't receive an error but the prompt page would not simply load up. Back to capturing the task manager, this happens to user on Cognos viewer and so random it is. It does happen like 4 - 5 times a day. Not any specific time of the day. I will try to get that info for you. In the log file, you can frequently find a BIBUS error (DPR-ERR-2077). All these were produced as PMRs with IBM but ended up closing without a proper solution. It makes me think 2077 error and HTTP error have some relationship. Perhaps the BIBUS died just when the user clicked on the report. I am sure I sound stupid:-)

It is a single server install except for content store is on another machine. It was the same before with 8.4.1 which worked great. I did tweak the configuration settings. Server has 32 GIG RAM and 4 processors. I have increased the report process count to 8. I played a lot with the affinity settings and I do believe now after reducing the affinity settings (had it high before) the errors have reduced. Currently it is at 2 as high and 4 as low. I did not touch the batch settings. Our scheduled reports work perfectly. I do have DQM enabled for  MSAS and Sales Force (it requires) for some reporting. However it is not in use yet at all.

So I do not see anything offensive with the ports and or the memory usage of the processes.  The reduction of the threading model would have been my next step which you have already done.  I will have a look at the PMR numbers to see if anything stands out.

Thank you. The actual PMR on this particular issue is PMR 60458,499,000.

So I do not see anything conclusive.  I do see the RSVP error family is involved as well but nothing that would help me pin point the probable cause.

I have gone ahead and compared the server.xml files between the two versions and do not see anything substantially different.

I would like to rule out the resource issue by having the BibusTKServerMain process expire on a regular basis to free up anything it maybe holding on to.    If you can locate the reportservice.xml file and change the following setting(This is different from the one they had you change earlier)  from:

<!-- The default number of requests that can be made to a process before it is expired --><param-name>default_process_use_limit</param-name><param-value>0</param-value>

     to

<!-- The default number of requests that can be made to a process before it is expired --><param-name>default_process_use_limit</param-name><param-value>50</param-value>

and stop and start the IBM Cognos BI server.

From there I would assume one of three things will happen, nothing, meaning the error frequency will remain the same.  The error will increase which would indicate that the issue is related to the termination of the Bus and or thread.  The error will decrease or go away completely, which means we are on the right track for a resource issue.

Hi, sorry for the delay I didn't get any mail about updates on this thread.

I'm running IIS 7.5 64 bits, in ISAPI mode, I did copy the files using CopyGateMod batch.

Windows server 2008 for the gateway and app server with 8Go af RAM. Windows server 2003 with Oracle for Content store and DataWarehouse server.

Users get the error on a daily basis but it seems to happen on 'few minutes' executing reports (ressource problem).

As naya62 : "Everything is 64 bit except for report server execution mode is set as 32 bit."

I can't say for sure that it happened when running 8.4 version of cognos.

In fact it looks like I'm almost in the exact same situation as naya62.

@Daniel, First off I want to thank you for going out of your way to help me on this. I know how much time it takes to research stuff like this! I made the changes last night. We will know something by this evening.

@f.gregoire, IBM Developers came back to me with a suggestion that this could be an issue with the data source that I use. I use MSAS 2008 and I was asked to upgrade to MSAS 2012 to see if that helps. Now that is ruled out from your reply. Although we are upgrading to 2012 version anyway. I did install 10.2.1 version on the dev server and did notice some annoying little issues from past to have been fixed now. I just can't do that to production until another month or so due to high usage for quarter close. Would you be able to try that as a solution? Also please take a look at Daniel's suggestions above. One main difference is, the error appears instantly when you click on the report in my environment.

Thanks a lot both of you. I'm willing to upgrade from 10.2 to 10.2.1 but we went live from 8.4 to 10.2 last week. I noticed just a few days before that there was a new realease and that was too short to switch due to the loooong testing phase. Also I do have some bugs related to the new version to deal with.

The fact we are running Oracle and not MSAS is somehow a good thing, we can be pretty sure it's not data source related. I'm starting to think that, as Daniel said, it's a ressource related problem .

I've had a little talk with my key users and we didn't face this error in 8.4, but they did this morning as we were testing reports that generate a heavy load on the database, and therfore I guess on the web and app server.

The strange thing is that you can reproduce at will the error unlike me.

I'll keep monitoring ressources and I'm curious about your feedback about your last night changes.

I think there is a misunderstanding. I can't repoduce the error at will either. Which is what makes it even harder to troubleshoot. BTW, I am 100% sure we did not face this issue with 8.4.1. Like you mentioned, I do see this error frequently with some specific reports that are large or needing high resource for aggregation etc. Perhaps users get the error on other reports too if those reports are triggered simultaneously.

Indeed there was a misunderstanding, it looks like we have exactly the same issues caused by the same thing. I Do think that my 2 users were receiving this error while I was causing it with the third user, running these massive reports.

I've been watching in windows logs, IIs logs,  and ressources graphs (both database and server ones) but nothing is unusual.

Excempt maybe a high cpu usage on my DB which is not surprising given the query and which is not necessarily a bad thing.

I'm a bit limited on how to monitor the java consumption on the app server because I can't reproduce the error at will so I can't be monitoring the java heap size all the time.

@Dan, The error appeared twice today as in the past it could be anything from 2 - 5 times depending on the usage. I will continue to monitor next week.

Boooo!  Try reducing the use limit setting to 25.  Remember to do a stop and start of the service.  If you get the error after that, then I will need to go back to the drawing board.

Hi Dan, I do believe this is to do with threading as you suspected. After I set it down to 50, there were two errors on Friday. I did realize later that I had tweaked the low/high affinity services earlier. So I changed them as 1 and 2 for High and Low. Monday there was only one error in the whole day. I just changed the settings to 25 as you mentioned and restarted the services. We will see how that goes today.
