Pinned topic Is Case Foundation just a marketing term?

‏2013-03-18T11:00:38Z |
This isn't a facetious question, I'm just confused.

The Product page says it is the new name for BPM, which is underpinned by the PE.

But from what I can see, if you install the Content Platform Engine, you still get all the old PE functionality. You can still do what you did with PE 5.0.

So what does Case Foundation give you, that is missing from Content Platform Engine?

    Hi,

The Case Foundation 5.2 is the expected roadmap from FileNet BPM to Case Management. There are several changes, such as CE and PE packaged as Content Plataform Engine (Content Services + Process Services), and others.

Download IBM Case Foundation Version 5.2
    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24034228&myns=swgimgmt&mynp=OCSSTHRT&mync=E

Download IBM FileNet Content Manager Version 5.2
    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24034227

    Regards,

    CW.

OK, so currently, the Case Foundation is identical to the Content Platform Engine.

Prior to P8 5.2 there were two major P8 packages: P8 Content Manager and P8 BPM. P8 Content Manager included both the Process Engine and Content Engine, as well as some other components. Customers purchasing P8 Content Manager could use the OOTB workflow capability that allowed them to use workflows that came with various components, but did not give them a license to create their own workflows. The P8 BPM package gave the customer everything in P8 Content Manager, plus the ability to create their own workflows and the use of components such as Case Analyzer and Process Simulator.

With the P8 5.2 release, the P8 Content Manager package still exists -- though, there is no longer a separate Process Engine installation and no separate Process Engine server. Instead, there is a server called the Content Platform Engine (CPE) which provides both content and process capabilities. The Case Analyzer capability is also part of the CPE installation. However, the same rules apply, in that purchasing P8 Content Manager doesn't give the user the right to use all the installed capabilities. The IBM Case Foundation package replaces the P8 BPM package and provides additional capabilities, such as the use of ECM Widgets, IBM Forms, and eForms. There is also an IBM Case Foundation installer. This installer basically displays a license that allows the customer to use, what is now referred to as, the "workflow system", Case Analyzer, Process Simulator.

Thanks for clarifying that Ruth, appreciate it.

Just to be clear then, when installing the Content Platform Engine, the workflow system is deployed, however it's not technically possible to use this (i.e. functionally prevented) unless the Case Foundation has been installed also?

We don't do anything to prevent the "workflow system" stuff from working. It is deployed and available as a result of installing CPE -- but a customer would be in violation of their license agreements if they used the capabilities without (a) purchasing the ICF bundle and (b) running the ICF installer and accepting the license

The Case Foundation name reflects the focus on providing content-centric, case-style solutions. It is the follow-on release to FileNet BPM 5.0/5.1. In this release there are certainly some architectural changes, but these changes are just a natural progression from moving from a C++ based app in 4.5.x to standalone JAVA app in 5.0 to JEE based app in 5.2.

So while the CE and PE have merged into the CPE, Case Foundation still does all the things that FileNet BPM did - it is just called Case Foundation now. All custom applications still work, you still have the Process Designer, Case Analyzer, Process Simulator, etc.

What the new release provides is a greatly simplified installation and architecture of the platform, greater ease and consolidation of administration, etc. Case Foundation now provides the process capabilities within the Content Platform Engine. We will all have to get used to the notion and terminology of a single CPE which is the result of consolidating CE + PE.

    Hope this helps
