Pinned topic Visual Studio Add-In stopped working with licensing problem

‏2013-03-11T21:33:10Z |
I've been successfully using DS 3.2 and Visual Studio 2012 since the release of the VS 2012 addin. Today it suddenly stopped working with the error

ERROR 42968 IBM SQL1598N An attempt to connect to the database server failed because of a licensing problem. SQLSTATE=42968

In the past this has indicated a DB2Connect license issue, so I ran the DB2Licm -l to check if a trial license of some sort had expired and I show the following license information.

C:\Program Files\IBM\SQLLIB\BIN>db2licm -l
Product name: "DB2 Connect Personal Edition"
Product identifier: "db2conpe"
Version information: "10.1"

Other developers who have not upgraded to DS 3.2 and are still using the 9.7 drivers see extra lines indicating license Type & expiry date

C:\Program Files\IBM\SQLLIB\BIN>db2licm -l
Product name: "DB2 Connect Personal Edition"
License Type: "Client Device"
Expiry date "Permanent"
Product identifier: "db2conpe"
Version information: "9.7"

My systems guy is using DS 3.2 but is using the 9.7 license.

What is the correct resolution for this.

This is urgent as I'm unable to make important production changes, so a quick response is appreciated.

Could you please clarify the following:
    1) Are you using the 'IBM Database Add-Ins for Visual Studio' to connect to DB2?
    2) Could you please provide details on when you get the particular effort? Is it thru Data Studio v3.2?
    3) Also, could you run testconn40 and share the output.

Here's the output from the testconn40 utility and db2cli validate, I actually answered two of you questions in my original post, but for clarity I'll repeat them again.

I'm using Data Studio 3.2 and the IBM Addin for Visual Studio 2012. Data Studio is working fine, but it does raise the related question is DB2 Connect required to use the Visual Studio Addin ?

    • It is very difficult to deduce what might have possibly caused this licensing problem.
    • Since it is urgent, request you to reach out to IBM-Support to have this addressed on priority.

Raj, can you answer this direct question.

Is a DBConnect license REQUIRED to use the Visual Studio Addin ?
Although 'IBM Database Add-In for Visual Studio' comes as a separate installable, most of the functionality is through the .NET data provider which is part of DB2Connect. This is exactly why I had requested you to share the 'testconn' output.

It seems to be a peculiar issue since your 'licm -l' output indicates it is a valid license but it throws a licensing error through testconn. Since this is a blocking issue and sensing the urgency I would request you to reach out to IBM support, so we could expedite further investigation on this. Also, we would need traces and other artefacts to investigate further which can best be channeled thru IBM-Support.

Do let me know if you need any help further on this.

    Regards,
    Raj
