Pinned topic duplicate ethernet entry in guradium virtual appliance

‏2013-02-28T13:27:28Z |
We have clone Guardium virtual appliance in VMware ESX Server. We Use the VMware virtual infrastructure server product to clone the first IBM InfoSphere Guardium VM configured to a template. And we have successfully deployed the clone appliance and configured all the network parameters to work and it is working properly.

But after when we run command in cli
show network interface inventory
It show 2 entry as
eth0 F5:GF:97:DC:3E:87 - Actual network adapter – Clone Appliance
eth0 F0:RF:88:eC:3E:35 - Actual network adapter – Template Appliance

How can we remove the 2nd duplicate eth0 adapter

Only 1 virtual adapter is assigned to appliance.

Is there any cli command to remove 2nd entry

Thanks in advance.

    Hi Ashish:

If the MACs are incorrect, please try as CLI user:
    • Run "store network interface inventory". The appliance will warn about resetting the NICs. Respond with "y"
    • Restart the system by running "restart system"

it is possible that you will need to reconfigure the network settings.

Here is a technote regarding cloning a Guardium appliance:

    http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21405780

Please let me know if this helps.

    Thanks,
    Ravi.

    Hello Ravi,

Thanks for the suggestion and actionable methods.

We have try running store network interface inventory command and restarted the system but still it is showing 2 entry in the network.

Attached here with results from 2 cli commands run on virtual collector

    1. show network interface all
It show 2 NIC but actual we have only 1

    2. show network interface inventory all
It show 2 eth0 entry actual we have only 1. Other entry(2nd entry) is the LAN which was from the clone template)

We have use the following CLI commands to map the network ports.
Command - show network interface inventory
    CLI> show network interface inventory
    eth0 00:13:72:50:CF:40
    eth0 00:13:72:50:CF:41

as you can see it is showing both entry as eth0

How can we remove the 2nd port

You can try this command to force mac address change (this usually used after nic change) - store network interface map eth0 xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (the correct mac address)

When you clone the VM and boot up the first, did it ask whether you are Copied or Moved? Which option do you choose?

We have used Copied option when VM started first time.

store network interface map eth0 xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx will force mac to change but my problem is different as you can see it is showing 2 entry after i run below cli command

    CLI> show network interface inventory
    eth0 00:13:72:50:CF:40
    eth0 00:13:72:50:CF:41

it show both as eth0 and it mac addresses

    how can i remove the 2nd entry i.e. eth0 00:13:72:50:CF:41 from cli

    Please guide

Hi, actually you should use MOVED instead of COPIED.

Well, maybe you can check at the .vmx configuration file to see are there contains two ethernet0 present in the configuration file.

As far as I know there is no option in Guardium for you to remove any ethx manually unless you physically remove the adapter and run the "store network inter inventory" to refresh it.

As per the IBM document it is saying that you should COPIED the vm.
    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21405780

While bring up the new VM if it asks if you moved or copied the VM, please answer with "copy", as this will enable the virtualization software to configure new parameters like MAC address for the clone.

We checked the .vmx setting and there is only 1 network adapter present.

    need some help....

    Hi, sorry. you are right.

May I know have you log the PMR with IBM support? Since our level of access is very limited to the system, so you might want IBM support to login as root and look into the problem for you.

We have not raised PMR yet with IBM and kept it as last alternative. Why the issue is critical because we have firewall rules which decline duplicate mac address in the network. After switching OFF firewall rule it is working fine. It is very strange why store network interface inventory is not updating(resetting) the network and removing the unwanted entry from system.

Yes, I do agree with you. Have you try remove the virtual network adapter and run the "store network inter inven" to see whether it does reflect the changes than put back the virtual network adapter and run again the "store network inter inven"?

    Just try on error. :-)
